A temporary lightweight steel foot over bridge has been built at Mumbai Central station to improve east-west connectivity after the Bellasis bridge was closed in June 2024. The old structure which was built in 1893 and had exceeded its expected lifespan of 100 years, was declared dangerous as it was not in a good condition and had surpassed its expected lifespan. Commuters had been facing difficulties due to the bridge's closure, which affected their daily travel. The new foot over bridge which includes plans for escalators, was completed in just six months which indeed is a remarkable achievement. This bridge marks a significant step for Mumbai, as it is the first of its kind built temporarily in response to a need for better pedestrian access. The Flyover bridge connects the station’s eastern side with the western side, allowing passengers to cross over the railway lines easily. It starts from the station approaching outside the ticket area and ends at JBB Road in Tardeo. The construction process was efficient. Workers fabricated the steel girders and columns at the same time as they dug the foundations, which sped up the project. The steel columns were erected in just two days, and it took four days to set up the cross girders. Thanks to prior trials, the assembly at the site took only three days, and the entire bridge was put up in a single day using a large crane. Instead of traditional reinforced concrete, the deck is made from a chequered plate, which saves a lot of time. This choice avoided the lengthy process of reinforcement and curing that concrete requires. The side railings and deck plate were installed at the same time, and the staircase was prefabricated to further speed up the work. Lighting was installed in just one day.
18 October,2024 01:10 PM ISTWestern Railway completed the metal barrier fencing on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Railways route on March 13. The fencing has been done to curb the cattle run-over incidents. While speaking to the ANI, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that after the installation of the fence, the risk of cattle getting killed will be zero. "This is a very innovative design of fencing which has been put up from Mumbai to Ahmedabad. After the installation of this fence, cattle will not be able to come on the track and the risk of cattle getting killed will practically be zero. This innovation has been accepted by people as well. Due to this fence, the trains running between Mumbai to Ahmedabad can be taken to 160 km/hour,” said Ashwini Vaishnaw. The metal beam fencing is very robust as it consists of two W-beams. A W-beam type stands for wide flanges, which are thicker, and aid in resisting bend stress. Such fencing is used in highways & expressways, especially in accident-prone areas to protect vehicles as well as pedestrians.
