S. Jaishankar taunts Canada using Hindi phrase amid India-Canada diplomatic row

Amid the ongoing diplomatic tensions between India and Canada, a previous statement by External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has resurfaced online. During a press conference on June 8, 2023, he addressed reports of celebrations in Canada marking the assassination of former PM Indira Gandhi. Dr. Jaishankar expressed confusion over why such actions occur, suggesting they stem from vote bank politics rather than genuine sentiment. He emphasized the concerning trend of allowing separatists and extremists to gain a platform, stating that this undermines relations and is detrimental to Canada. Additionally, he responded to comments from Canada's National Security Advisor regarding alleged Indian interference in domestic politics, referencing the proverb "Ulta chor kotwal ko daante," implying that those accusing India might themselves be engaging in questionable practices. Dr. Jaishankar's remarks highlight the complexity and sensitivity of the evolving diplomatic landscape between the two nations.

PM Justin Trudeau & UK PM Keir Starmer's talks on India & China tensions

India and Canada are facing serious tensions following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's claims about India’s involvement in the killing of Hardeep Nijjar, a Sikh leader and alleged terrorist, in Canada. Trudeau described the situation as a matter of investigation, suggesting that some Indian diplomats are “persons of interest.” The Indian government has strongly denied these allegations, calling them politically motivated and aimed at gaining support within Canada. Since making these claims, Canada has not provided any evidence to back them up, which India labels as "absurd" and "baseless." As the situation escalates, Trudeau has sought support from the UK Prime Minister, but the relationship between the two countries remains strained, with both sides exchanging accusations and standing firm on their positions.
