India-Iran 75th anniversary: Foreign ministers share warm messages of friendship

On the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Iran, Iranian Foreign Minister shared a special message to India, which was warmly reciprocated by India's External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar. This exchange of friendly gestures highlights the growing importance of the India-Iran relationship in the current global geopolitical landscape. Despite tensions between Israel and Iran, with the United States supporting Israel, India has remained steadfast in its historical ties with Iran, advocating for peace in the region. The longstanding relationship between the two countries is built on mutual respect and cooperation, which has only strengthened over time. Since India and Iran signed a formal 'Friendship Treaty' on March 15, 1950, their ties have deepened, with key agreements like the Tehran and New Delhi Declarations in 2001 and 2003. One of the most significant partnerships is India's involvement in the development of Chabahar Port in Iran. The Chabahar Agreement, signed in May 2016 by India, Iran, and Afghanistan, established a vital International Transport and Transit Corridor, further enhancing India's presence in the Middle East. Iranian Ambassador Iraj Elahi, in a February statement, called Chabahar Port the "golden gateway" for regional connectivity, emphasizing its importance in strengthening India-Iran ties. India has already provided around 24 million US dollars in port equipment for Chabahar, with more to come. Iran also plays a crucial role in multilateral organizations like the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) and the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS), highlighting its commitment to regional cooperation on economic and security matters.

He also issued travel bans and financial sanctions. Colombia quickly retaliated with a threat of a 50% tariff on U.S. goods. Canada denies reports of PM Modi's involvement in Nijjar killing

India’s ties with Canada have seen sharp deterioration with India repeatedly expressing its deep concern about anti-India activities in Canada. Canada’s PM Trudeau had claimed that he has “credible allegations” of India’s hand in the killing of K-terrorist Hardeep Nijjar. Now taking a U-turn on the same, Ottawa has officially denied the reports of the Canada-based Newspaper that claimed India’s link in the K-terrorist Nijjar killing. The action came after India strongly objected to a report in Globe & Mail newspaper that drew a connection between Nijjar’s death to PM Modi. On Nov 20, India had strongly refuted the reports and said it should be dismissed with the “contempt they deserve”. The Ministry of External Affairs had emphasised that “smear campaigns” like this only “further damage our already strained ties”.

India-Canada Dispute: Can Trump presidency help resolve the deadlock?

India-Canada Dispute: Can Trump presidency help resolve the deadlock?

A Trump presidency could shift the dynamics of the ongoing India-Canada dispute, although it's uncertain whether it would lead to a quick resolution. Donald Trump has shown a strong rapport with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and tends to prioritize strategic alliances over issues like internal policy differences. Some experts suggest that Trump’s alignment with Modi might push Canada to adjust its stance, potentially cooling tensions if Canada feels sidelined in the U.S.-India relationship. Trump’s focus on transactional diplomacy, especially with economically or militarily strategic partners like India, may favor India’s position over Canada’s in this dispute.
