Dabholkar murder: Nagori, Khandelwal apply for bail

Cashing in on the ‘confession’ made by commissioner of police Gulabrao Pol recently about the unsolved murder case of Dr Narendra Dabholkar despite arrests made in it, defence counsel BA Aloor has moved an application seeking bail of accused Manish Nagori, allegedly an illegal arms dealer, and his associate Vikas Khandelwal. Additional Sessions Judge SA Qazi has kept fixed March 11 as the date for hearing on the plea.

Dr Dabholkar was shot dead by two unidentified assailants near Omkareshwar Temple Bridge at Narayan Peth on August 20 last year. While answering a question about stalled investigations in the case, Pol had admitted that the case was still ‘unsolved’ and the real masterminds behind the gruesome act remain unknown. As reported by mid-day on February 27, Pol had blamed citizens and witnesses for their non-cooperation leading to police failure in cracking the case (‘Top cop blames citizens for unsolved Dabholkar murder’).

Aloor said, “Our application states the facts that there is no concrete evidence pertaining to the involvement of Nagori and Khandelwal in Dr Dabholkar’s murder. During the 14-days custodial interrogation of both, police were unable to establish any link of the arrested duo with other accused, nor did anyone identify the duo.”

“The only piece of evidence the police have come up with is the ballistics report obtained by them from the experts, which can’t establish the alleged role of Nagori and Khandelwal. If police want to go ahead with the case, the only charges they can level against the duo are about illegal possession of arms and nothing else.” Aloor claimed.
