The boy’s parents believe that frequent fights with the neighbour may have led to the suicide, but the police are also scrutinising other angles, like examination stress

A standard IX student from Yerawada committed suicide on Sunday night at his residence by hanging himself from the ceiling. The boy’s relatives claim that he took the extreme step due to frequent scuffles between his family and their neighbour. The police said that the exact reason is yet to be determined.

The deceased has been identified as Sofiyan Galib Gulan Shaikh (15). He was studying in SNBP School at Yerawada. Sofiyan’s father Galib works in a de-addiction centre, while his mother runs a beauty parlour in the area.

Galib Shaikh said, “Our neighbour Ismail Babulal Shaikh sells vada pav just outside our building and his customers block the road leading to my place. We had told Ismail about this problem several times and had also filed complaints regarding this with the Parnakuti and Shastri Nagar police, but Ismail refused to pay heed to our requests and complaints.”

“On Sunday we had a major brawl with Ismail after which Sofiyan was worried. We never thought he would take such a drastic step over such a petty dispute,” Galib Shaikh added.
