A baby girl was found abandoned on the doorstep of a Thane woman's home, said police on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old lady told police that when she was in the kitchen of her home in Sainath Nagar, Louis Wadi, on Sunday night, she heard an infant's cry. Upon looking around for the source of the sound, she discovered the infant girl lying outside her door, as told by a Wagle Estate police official to news agency PTI.

The Thane woman immediately notified police about the newborn found on her doorstep, who arrived at her home and transported the infant to Thane Civil Hospital for medical treatment, according to the official, the PTI reported.

According to the official, a case has been filed under Section 317 of the Indian Penal Code, which covers the exposure and abandonment of a kid under the age of 12 by a parent or caretaker.

Police are working to locate the child's parents, the report added.

Meanwhile, in another unrelated incident, the Thane Police arrested a 27-year-old man who had been evading the authorities for over seven months. The youth has been arrested in connection to an attempted murder case involving a meat shop owner based in Thane, an official told PTI on Tuesday.

On June 14, of last year, a group of seven or eight people are said to have used sharp weapons to attack the owner of a meat business in the Dhokali area. According to Senior Police Inspector Anand Raorane, the owner was asked for information about a certain person, and when they refused, they became violent. The person was hospitalised for treatment after suffering serious injuries, stated the report in PTI.

According to the report, the case was filed by the police against the defendants, who included the 27-year-old runaway, for several offences including criminal intimidation, attempt to murder, and intentionally causing harm.

Around 3 pm on Monday, the police took the fugitive into custody after receiving information about his position close to the Thane circuit house. It was stated that he had arrived to see a defendant in an extortion case. Police sources had stated that two other people connected to the attempted murder investigation had already been taken into custody, the PTI report added.
