A 27-year-old man was held in connection with an attempted murder case involving a meat store owner in Thane city after avoiding investigators for more than seven months, an official stated on Tuesday. Last year, on June 14, a group of 7-8 people allegedly attacked the meat shop owner in the Dhokali neighbourhood using sharp weapons, reported PTI.

According to the report, Senior Police Inspector Anand Raorane revealed that the assault occurred after the owner failed to comply with their request for information about a certain suspect. The victim suffered severe injuries and was treated in a hospital.

The police charged the suspects, including the 27-year-old fugitive, with several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including attempted murder, voluntarily causing harm, criminal intimidation, and other offences, the report added.

Police caught the fugitive at 3 pm on Monday after receiving information about his whereabouts near the Thane circuit house. He had reportedly come to meet with a guy accused of extortion. Two other people linked in the attempted murder case have previously been apprehended, according to police sources, the PTI report stated.

Meanwhile, in another incident, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Mumbai officially charged Arjun Suryawanshi, an assistant commissioner of state revenue, and several staff from the Maharashtra GST department. According to an official statement, the complaint focuses on an alleged demand for a large bribe of Rs 1 crore from a corporate director to resolve a pending tax issue, the PTI report added.

On February 2, the ACB Mumbai unit recorded the charge under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act. This section addresses offences involving public workers receiving bribes. The FIR was initiated following a letter from the special commissioner of state tax and chief vigilance officer to the Maharashtra director general of police (ACB), demanding an investigation into corruption charges against the state tax investigation branch, the report added.

The investigation found that Suryawanshi and his crew raided a company with more over Rs 20 crore in delinquent taxes between July 5 and August 7, last year. Despite several reminders, the firm's director failed to pay the pending tax, prompting GST officials to visit his workplace and apartment, the report added.

According to the report, Suryawanshi allegedly sent a WhatsApp message to the company's director on August 21 seeking Rs 1 million to settle the tax situation. Although no money exchanged hands, the inquiry corroborated the bribe demand, prompting the filing of the FIR. Further inquiries into the situation are presently underway.
