Mumbai: Man makes fake BMC ID, stumbles upon fake clean-up marshal scam

The fake ID made by Rohit Yadav

The conscience of a man who got a fake BMC ID made, to help him travel amid COVID restrictions, has revealed an operation where people are using such IDs to pose as clean up marshals to enforce COVID protocols and take money from people. When Rohit Yadav got the ID made for a few hundred rupees, he also got to know of the operation being managed by the people who made the ID. Yadav then wrote to Charkop police about it and sent copies of his own ID.

The operation of fake clean-up marshals is allegedly being run in the name of a genuine company, Sanik Intelligence and Security Pvt Ltd. Three days ago, Charkop police received the letter from Yadav claiming Sainik Intelligence and Security’s ‘marshals’ in R South ward (Kandivli E, Charkop) are fraudsters with fake BMC IDs. The letter claimed that the company had been collecting fines illegally in the name of BMC for a year and a half.

Police launched an enquiry and found the claim to be genuine. Officially, Sanik Intelligence and Security’s owner is Sunil Gupta. The company’s office was traced to Bhayandar. It was not aware that a tender had been allotted in its name. “The company also did not know that someone is operating in their name and collecting money through clean-up marshals,” said an officer from Charkop police station.
mid-day’s messages to Prashant Manjarekar, assistant engineer of the R South ward, who is handling tender operations for the ward, went unanswered.

A representative from Sainik Intelligence and Security said they know of the case and are exploring legal options. Charkop police are yet to register an offence. An officer said they are investigating into the matter.
