Serbian students in thousands gather to protest against the government

Serbian students in thousands gather to protest against the government

In a litmus test for President Aleksandar Vučić’s administration, thousand of students gathered in Belgrade for anti-government demonstrations reflecting widespread public dissatisfaction and the escalating momentum of anti-corruption protests. The catalyst for this movement was the tragic collapse of the Novi Sad railway station roof in November 2024, which claimed 15 lives—a disaster many attribute to governmental negligence.  This gathering will be followed up by a rally in which students from across Serbia march on foot to the capital protesting against the current government.

Tear gas & smoke grenades fill Serbian parliament in protest against government

On March 4, opposition deputies in Serbia threw smoke grenades and tear gas inside the parliament to protest government policies. This protest followed public anger over a train station roof collapse four months ago that killed 15 people. The demonstrations, initially about the collapse, have become a major challenge to the Serbian government. During a legislative session, the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) approved the agenda. Some opposition politicians rushed to the speaker’s podium, where they clashed with security guards. Others threw smoke grenades and tear gas, filling the air with black and pink smoke, which was seen live on TV. The protests have grown into one of the biggest challenges for the government.
