20 March,2025 09:28 PM ISTCongress spokesperson Dr. Shama Mohamed criticized Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma, calling him "overweight" and "the most unimpressive captain India has ever had." Her comments came after Sharma was dismissed for 15 runs off 17 balls in India's Champions Trophy match against New Zealand, which India won by 44 runs. In a now-deleted post, Mohamed wrote, "Rohit Sharma is fat for a sportsman! Need to lose weight! And of course, the most unimpressive Captain India has ever had!" Mohamed faced backlash online for her remarks and later deleted the post. Pawan Khera, Chairman of the Media & Publicity Department of the All India Congress Committee, clarified that Mohamed had been asked to remove the post. Defending her comment, Mohamed said it was a general remark about the fitness of sportspeople and was not meant to body-shame Sharma. The criticism sparked strong reactions, including from Shehzad Poonawala, a member of the ruling BJP, who took a jab at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Additionally, Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi disagreed with Mohamed's comments. This is not the first time Rohit Sharma has faced criticism over his fitness. Former South African cricketer Daryll Cullinan had also raised concerns about Sharma’s fitness in the past, comparing him to Virat Kohli.
