YouTuber Samay Raina appears before Assam Police
YouTuber Samay Raina on Saturday appeared before the Assam Police here in connection with a case filed against him and four others for allegedly promoting obscenity on a publicly accessible online show, a police officer said. Raina, who had earlier informed the police that he was out of the country, appeared before the investigating officer of the Crime Branch, Guwahati Police. "He was examined and his statement recorded in connection with the case," the officer said. Guwahati Police had registered a case on February 10 against Raina and YouTubers and social media influencers Ranveer Allahbadia, Ashish Chanchlani, Jaspreet Singh, Apoorva Makhija, among others, for promoting obscenity and engaging in sexually explicit and vulgar discussion in a publicly accessible online show, causing a serious harm to public decency and morality. Guwahati Police's Crime Branch had registered a case under sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), read with sections of the IT Act, Cinematograph Act 1952 and Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986. Allahbadia had also appeared before the Guwahati Police on March 7 and was questioned for over four hours. The police said that he had cooperated and assured of extending his cooperation in future, including coming to Guwahati whenever he is called, for the case. The Supreme Court had granted him protection from arrest but had termed his remarks "vulgar". Another accused in the case, Ashish Chanchlani, was the first to appear before the police on February 27 and was granted anticipatory bail by the Gauhati High Court on February 7. Jaspreet Singh and Apporva Makhiija were yet to appear before the police who have sent them summons again after they sent emails that they were out of the country, the officer said. Besides the five YouTubers, the owner of the place where the shooting of the controversial show took place has also been named in the FIR, he added. Bengal Guv seeks deployment of adequate forces to ensure peaceful Ram Navami
On the eve of the Ram Navami celebrations in West Bengal, Governor C V Ananda Bose on Saturday called upon the state administration to deploy an adequate number of security forces to ensure the religious festival is celebrated peacefully across the state on April 6. Bose also announced activating the 'peace room' at Raj Bhavan for any situation. The governor in 2023 launched the 'peace room', a helpline to respond to the grievances of the public. Clashes between groups were reported during Ram Navami celebrations in the state in recent years. In a statement, the Raj Bhavan advised the state government to activate the security mechanism and deploy the required number of security forces to "ensure that Shri Ram Navami is observed peacefully across the state." "Raj Bhavan has reactivated the 24x7 peace room with augmented manpower to take prompt action as necessary. Former IG, SSB, S Bandyopadhyay is designated the chief of task force for the purpose. A Rapid Action team has also been formed for speedy response," he said. "The Mobile Raj Bhavan will be on the road since early morning of April 6," the statement said. BJP claims Kejriwal spent Rs 31 lakh monthly on maintenance of CM's bungalow
The BJP lashed out at AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday citing an RTI reply that revealed Rs 3.69 crore was spent annually between 2015 and 2022 for the regular maintenance of the former chief minister's bungalow at 6, Flagstaff Road. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva, quoting the RTI reply, said a total of Rs 29.56 crore was spent between March 31, 2015, and December 27, 2022, on general repairs, sewage, electricity and structural works of the bungalow that was occupied by Kejriwal when he was the chief minister. While the BJP leader asked Kejriwal to "come forward and explain what exactly was lacking in his bungalow that required Rs 31 lakh to be spent every month on its maintenance", the AAP sought to know what the ruling party would achieve by abusing Kejriwal. The opposition party pointed out that the bungalow was a government accommodation, not Kejriwal's private property. Sachdeva said details obtained through a Right To Information (RTI) query have shown that Rs 3,69,54,384 was spent annually on regular maintenance of the bungalow. Kejriwal, who came to power with promises of leading a government for the common man, was exposed by his "luxurious lifestyle" at the "Sheesh Mahal" constructed "secretively at a cost of Rs 52 crore", Sachdeva claimed. The BJP has been targeting the AAP and Kejriwal over the reconstruction works at the bungalow, describing it as a "Sheesh Mahal" for its "expensive" interiors and household goods. "We are presenting more evidence of Kejriwal's five-star lifestyle and corruption, and we demand an immediate response from him," Sachdeva said at a press conference here. The Delhi BJP chief said a person from Maharashtra had filed the RTI query, seeking details of the maintenance expenses on the bungalow and added that the figures revealed Kejriwal's "extravagant lifestyle" and "corruption" in government works. "In Delhi, where one can build a decent 250-300 square yard house spending Rs 3 to 4 crore, the cost of maintenance of Kejriwal's bungalow at Rs 3.69 crore annually is astonishing," he said. The BJP leader said that Kejriwal has been avoiding answering the questions for a long time. The people of Delhi expect him to come forward and clarify what exactly was so deficient in his bungalow that Rs 31 lakh per month was needed for its maintenance, he added. AAP hit back, saying the BJP "betrayed" Delhi and did not provide Rs 2,500 for women and free cylinders on Holi which proved that their poll promises were just gimmick. While Delhi is suffering due to power cuts and arbitrary fee hikes by private schools, the BJP president is busy hurling abuses at Kejriwal, the opposition party alleged. Maharashtra: Woman dies after being allegedly denied treatment by Pune hospital
A probe has been launched by the Pune district administration over the death of a woman, Tanisha Bhise, after she was allegedly refused admission by Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune over a demand of advance payment. A relative of Tanisha Bhise alleged that the hospital authorities demanded a large sum of money from the victim's family as advance payment. An internal inquiry by Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital into the alleged refusal "to admit a pregnant woman over a Rs 10 lakh advance" termed the family's complaint as "misleading". The Pune District Collector has formed a three-member committee to investigate the matter and submit its report in the next two days. The incident ignited protests and several women workers of the Pune BJP unit vandalised the private clinic of a doctor of the Mangeshkar hospital. The deceased woman's husband is the close associate of BJP MLC Amit Gorkhe. Maharashtra minister and state BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule said that it was an "unfortunate accident". He added that the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has intervened in the matter. "It is an unfortunate incident... The doctors had a wrong conduct and the treatment was denied due to which the death happened. The Chief Minister has intervened in the matter. Strict action will be taken against those responsible and such incidents will not be tolerated...", Chandrashekhar Bawankule told reporters. According to victim's relatives, she was not admitted to the hospital despite being in a very serious condition. Priyanka Patil, sister-in-law of Tanisha Bhise, alleged that the hospital authorities did not admit the patient as they were not able to arrange the demanded admission fee. "When we reached there, they checked her BP...We were told that her condition is critical and they need to do an analysis. They told her not to eat or drink anything...They told us to deposit Rs 20 lakh...Her BP further shot up and she even started bleeding. We arranged Rs 3 lakh within an hour and rushed to the billing department and urged them to admit her...But they did not accept the money...and demanded the exact amount that was mentioned initially...Doctor told her to consume medicine that was earlier prescribed to her, to stop bleeding. But they did nothing else...We finally tried to take her to Sassoon Hospital and brought a wheelchair on our own. Nobody helped us...Check the CCTVs, they did nothing for three hours...", Priyanka Patil alleged. According to Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi, he received the information about the incident on Thursday and said that a three-member committee has been formed under the chairmanship of the civil surgeon to investigate the matter, and submit the report in the next two days. "I received the information yesterday that some misconduct might have happened in the hospital, so I have established a three-member committee under the Chairmanship of the civil surgeon. He will submit the report within the next two days and take statements from the guardians and family members as well as hospital authorities... On the basis of this, we will decide the further actions to be taken in terms of the SOPs...", he told ANI BJP MLC Amit Gorkhe said that the the victim's husband went with his pregnant wife for admission. "Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital was started with good intentions, but the hospital is getting defamed due to some people. The recent incident happened with my close associate, who went to the hospital for the admission of his wife, who was pregnant with two babies, and he was asked for a payment of Rs 20 lakhs. They were denied treatment even after giving a receipt of Rs 10 lakh", Amit Gorkhe claimed. Gorkhe claimed that he called the hospital authorities but they did not consider the request. He said that he has spoken to Chief Minister about the matter. "I even called the medical staff, but they did not consider it. The couple shifted 2-3 hospitals during which the incident happened. My direct accusation is over the doctors and staff of the Hospital... I had a discussion on this with CM Devendra Fadnavis, who said that an inquiry committee will be set up to investigate this and the staff and doctors found the culprit will be subjected to immediate action. I demand that such doctors be immediately rusticated... Such hospitals must go through monthly audit...", he added. Shiv Sena MLA and Maharashtra minister Uday Samant stated that action will be taken if the incident is a "murder". "The CM and Deputy Chief Ministers have expressed their strong emotions about the case. Action will be taken if it is a case of murder. The administration will ensure such incidents are not repeated...", Samant told reporters. According to Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital, four-member committee of Dr Dhananjay Kelkar, Dr Anuja Joshi, Dr Sameer Jog, and Dr Sachin Vyavhare found that Dr Kelkar had advised the family to pay what they could, but they did not follow this advice. Based on senior gynaecologists' opinions, the twin pregnancy was deemed high-risk. A hospital press note said the report noted that the woman, Ishwari Sushant Bhise, "hadn't undergone antenatal checkups at the hospital for six months despite being a known patient since 2020" "She had previously availed 50 per cent charity for surgery in 2022 and was advised in 2023 to consider adoption due to the high-risk nature of future pregnancies. On March 15, Dr Sushrut Ghaisas warned her of the risks and advised weekly follow-ups. She missed the March 22 checkup but visited the OPD on March 28. While stable, she was advised admission for observation and told that NICU care for premature twins could cost Rs 10-20 lakh. The family agreed to start treatment and contacted Dr Kelkar about financial issues. He advised them to pay what they could, but the patient left without informing the hospital," the press note said. Corruption in UP govt's cow welfare scheme: Akhilesh Yadav on stray cattle issue
Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Friday alleged that there was corruption in the Uttar Pradesh government scheme that deals with destitute cows' care and nutrition. Yadav, a former chief minister of the state, accused the BJP government of failing to solve the problem of stray cattle. In a post on X, the SP chief said, "UP's 'Mukhyamantri Sahyogita Yojana' for cows has actually become a corruption-shayogita scheme. In the so-called cow shelters, neither are the animals being given enough food, nor is there any arrangement for medicine and treatment, nor for disposal of their dead bodies." ASF kills over 1,050 pigs in 3 districts of Mizoram
The African Swine Fever (AFS), which resurfaced in Mizoram last month, so far killed over 1,050 pigs, officials said. An official from Mizoram's Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department (AHVD) said on Friday that the department so far declared 34 localities in three districts as ASF-infected zones -- Lawngtlai, Mamit and Siaha. Mizoram’s Lawngtlai shares borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, Mamit, borders Tripura and Bangladesh and Siaha shares borders with Myanmar. Several teams of AHVD have culled over 400 pigs and piglets in the three districts so far. The fresh outbreak of ASF was confirmed on March 20 through tests in the Northeast Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (NERDDL) in Guwahati. According to the AHVD officials, earlier last month, a fresh outbreak of ASF hit the Lawngtlai district. The state government is monitoring the situation closely, as efforts are being made to curb the spread of the deadly disease in the unaffected areas. Last year, Mizoram suffered a loss of Rs 336.49 crore due to the outbreak of ASF, which left 15,000 pigs dead while around 24,200 pigs were culled to prevent the spread of the disease. The outbreak of the contagious disease started in mid-March 2021, and since then, the ASF has caused huge losses to farmers and government farms. In 2021, around 33,417 pigs and piglets died, and 12,568 were culled due to infectious disease, while in 2022, at least 12,795 pigs and piglets died and 11,686 were culled, and in 2023, 1,139 pigs and piglets died and 980 were culled. In 2024, the first ASF case was reported on February 9 in Leithum village in Champhai district, which shares unfenced borders with Myanmar. The northeastern state, which shares unfenced borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, has incurred financial losses of Rs 896.69 crore due to the disease since 2021. "In view of the death and culling of pigs and piglets due to the ASF outbreak, Mizoram suffered a loss of Rs 334.14 crore in 2021, Rs 210.32 crore in 2022 and Rs 15.77 crore in 2023," an AHVD official told IANS. The government has provided compensation to several hundred families for the loss of pigs due to the highly communicable disease, she said. The ASF, which, however, does not affect humans, is a highly infectious disease among pigs and poses a severe threat with a very high mortality rate. China hits back at Donald Trump tariffs
China on Friday hit back at the US by slapping an additional 34 per cent tariff on all imported American products. The tariffs will be imposed on all imported US products starting April 10, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. China also filed a lawsuit with WTO after the US slapped “reciprocal tariffs" on trading partners and has decided to ban the export of dual-use items to 16 US entities. European stocks saw some of the day's biggest losses, with indexes sinking roughly 5 per cent. The price of crude oil tumbled to its lowest level since 2021. Other basic building blocks for economic growth, such as copper, also saw prices slide on worries the trade war will weaken the global economy. In other markets, Germany's DAX lost 5.2 per cent, France's CAC 40 dropped 4.6 per cent and Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 2.8 per cent. Minor relief for India The US has revised the import duties to be imposed on India from 27 per cent to 26 per cent, White House documents showed. Announcing reciprocal tariffs on Wednesday, US President Donald Trump held up a chart that showed India charged 52 per cent tariffs, including currency manipulation and trade barriers, and said America would charge India a discounted reciprocal tariff of 26 per cent. Julia Spies, chief of trade and market intelligence at the International Trade Center, said uncertainties remain about the exact way US officials came up with the tariffs. She said the figures roughly match the US trade balance—or imbalance—with a specific country, divided by imports from that country, “and that, divided by two, gives us the reciprocal tariff” imposed by the US. India-US trade connect From 2021-22 to 2023-24, the US has been India's largest trading partner. The country accounts for about 18 per cent of India's total goods exports, 6.22 per cent in imports, and 10.73 per cent bilateral trade. With America, India had a trade surplus (the difference between imports and exports) of $35.32 bn in goods in 2023-24. Cross-examine virtually: SC denies physical production of Yasin Malik
The Supreme Court on Friday refused the physical production of jailed JKLF chief Yasin Malik before a Jammu court but allowed him to cross-examine witnesses in a couple of cases through virtual mode. A bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan observed the Centre’s order of December 2024 under Section 303 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act restricting his movement from the NCT of Delhi for a year. The order came in the matter where CBI sought transfer of the trials in the 1989 case of the kidnapping of Rubaiya Sayeed, daughter of former union minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, and the 1990 Srinagar shootout case, from Jammu to New Delhi. The top court noted the Jammu sessions court was “well-equipped” with the virtual system. The CBI’s plea before the court challenged the September 20, 2022 order of a Jammu trial court directing lifer Malik to be produced before it physically to cross-examine prosecution witnesses in the abduction case. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta also submitted that Malik was a security risk and cannot be taken to the Jammu court physically. The CBI said he was a threat to the national security and couldn’t be allowed to be taken outside the Tihar jail premises. ‘I am not a terrorist’ Malik told the Supreme Court that he was a “political leader and not a terrorist” and claimed seven prime ministers had engaged in a dialogue with him in the past. “CBI’s objection is that I am a security threat. I am responding to that. I am not a terrorist and only a political leader,” Malik, appearing via video-conferencing, told the SC. India will help rebuild Myanmar: Envoy
India will engage closely with Myanmar in rebuilding infrastructure and cultural landmarks devastated by the massive earthquake that left over 3000 dead, India’s envoy to the country said. “Myanmar will be looking for support and developmental assistance from India, and we will discuss and assess their needs. But I can certainly say that we will be very closely engaged with Myanmar in both the rehabilitation and the reconstruction phase,” India’s Ambassador to Myanmar Abhay Thakur said.
