Amidst clashes, calls for justice emerge as farmer’s death sparks outrage and demands for accountability

Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher on Thursday demanded registration of a murder case against those responsible for the death of a protesting farmer at the Khanauri border point of Punjab-Haryana. Subhkaran Singh, 21, hailing from Bathinda district, died at Khanauri on the Sangrur-Jind border.

The incident took place when some protesting farmers were trying to head towards barricades. Singh was killed and about 12 police personnel were injured in clashes at Khanauri on the Punjab-Haryana border on Wednesday.
Pandher said the Punjab government should take action against the Haryana paramilitary force personnel for allegedly damaging 25-30 tractor-trolleys after entering into the state’s territory. Speaking to reporters in Patiala, Pandher accused the Haryana security personnel of entering into the Punjab territory and using “force” against farmers at Khanauri border point.
“We want the Punjab government to register a case under Section 302 (murder of the IPC),” said Pandher. Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal demanded that the Punjab government give the status of martyr to Shubkaran.
X disagrees with government action
Social media platform X on Thursday expressed disagreement with the Indian government’s order to block accounts and posts related to the ongoing farmers’ protests and called for extending freedom of expression to the affected posts.

The Congress alleged on Thursday that the democracy is being “murdered” in the country, after micro blogging platform X voiced their disagreement with the government order. Tagging a statement issued by X’s Global Government Affairs team, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “Murder Of Democracy in India.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi underlined his government’s commitment to fulfilling its pledge for the welfare of farmers, asserting that a “historic” hike in sugarcane’s price is part of such efforts.This will benefit crores of sugarcane farmers, he said in a series of posts on X.
