BJP fields Ex-Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai's son for Shiggaon assembly by-poll

The BJP on Saturday announced former Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai's son as its candidate for Shiggaon by-poll and the party's ST Morcha president Bangaru Hanumanthu for Sandur Assembly segment. The announcement of Bharath Bommai's candidature marks the entry of third generation of Bommai family into electoral politics. His grandfather S R Bommai and father Basavaraj Bommai were former chief ministers of the state. Basavaraj Bommai is now a BJP MP from Haveri Lok Sabha segment. Meanwhile, the BJP-JD(S) alliance is yet to announce the name of the candidate for Channapatna assembly constituency. In its most likelihood, the ticket would be reserved for JD(S). According to the JD(S) sources, chances are high that Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy's son Nikhil Kumaraswamy may be fielded from Channapatna. The Congress has not yet announced its candidates, though party sources said Pathan Ahmed Khan, who was defeated by Basavaraj Bommai in 2023 assembly election may be fielded again from Shiggaon assembly seat. In Sandur, Congress MP E Tukaram's wife or daughter may be given the ticket, they said. Regarding Channapatna, they claimed that Deputy Chief Minister and Congress state president D K Shivakumar's brother D K Suresh may get the ticket. These assembly bypolls were necessitated due to the resignation of three sitting MLAs, H D Kumaraswamy (Channapatna), E Tukaram (Sandur) and Basavaraj Bommai (Shiggaon) resigned from assembly after winning the Lok Sabha elections. Falsely accused of having massage in Tihar jail: AAP's Satyendar Jain

AAP leader Satyendar Jain on Saturday said he was falsely accused of having massage in Tihar jail while he was getting physiotherapy due to "severe" leg pain. A controversy arose in November 2022 when videos of CCTV camera footage from Tihar jail surfaced showing alleged "massage" being given to Jain who was then the Delhi prisons department minister. In a statement issued by AAP, Jain said the video was an "exaggeration". The doctor had prescribed exclusive bed rest for a month and the hospital doctors suggested him to stay in a room with better facilities. He could not bend or lift anything and was restricted from moving, the former Delhi minister said. "During that time, I had severe leg pain. They arranged everything accordingly. "Does anyone ever get a massage fully clothed? The physiotherapist was just doing his job, yet they falsely claimed I was getting a massage," said the AAP leader. Jain was released from Tihar jail, where he spent 18 months, on Saturday after being granted bail by a Delhi court in a money laundering case. He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the case in March 2022. He said Tihar jail has cameras everywhere and questioned why does not footage of anything else came out and only his was available. "They claimed I was having lavish meals, but all I had were seasonal fruits and vegetables," he said, and claimed for an entire year he did not eat any lavish meal and lost 40 kg of weight in the jail. "There's a canteen where anyone can buy food with money and I have all the bills to prove it. They said I drank bottled water but I bought it from the canteen, which is available to everyone," he said. The former minister also claimed that everyone had a TV in jail but he did not have a separate one. "I was kept in a barrack for months where even notorious criminals are not kept for more than 15 days," he claimed. No immediate reaction was available from Tihar administration over Jain's claims. "I was kept isolated, and even after doctors advised otherwise, they refused to let me be with others as they wanted to torture me," Jain claimed. He lashed out at the BJP alleging "if not for the judiciary, the BJP would have hanged me". Referring to his videos from the jail, Jain said, "If the BJP is making these claims, why did they not release the video earlier? They only started airing it during the Gujarat elections." Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor said Jain's claims and charges were "ridiculous". "The AAP leaders spin fabricated stories after coming out of jail as Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh did earlier, and now Satyendar Jain is doing the same. If Jain was having problems in Tihar, what stopped him from bringing it to the notice of the court?" Kapoor asked. On the first day of his freedom after months of imprisonment, the AAP leader visited a Jain temple along with his family. In the evening he attended a party meeting in which Kejriwal and other senior leaders were present. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. BJP announces candidates for assembly bypolls in Bengal

The BJP on Saturday announced candidates for six assembly constituencies in West Bengal where bypolls will be held on November 13, with the electoral contest expected to be a litmus test for all political parties amid ongoing doctors' protests over the RG Kar incident. The ruling TMC, along with the opposition Left Front and Congress, were yet to announce their candidates. The constituencies going to polls in November include Madarihat in Alipurduar district, Sitai in Cooch Behar, Naihati and Haroa in North 24 Parganas, Taldangra in Bankura, and Medinipur in Paschim Medinipur district. BJP nominated Rupak Mitra for Naihati, Bimal Das for Haroa, Rahul Lohar for Madarihat, Subhajit Roy for Medinipur, Ananya Roy Chakraborty for Taldangra and Dipak Kumar Roy for Sitai. Because of the resignations of sitting MLAs following their win in this year's Lok Sabha elections, all six constituencies are holding bypolls, with the TMC having won five of these seats in the 2021 assembly polls, except for Madarihat, which was held by the BJP. "We are confident of retaining the Madarihat seat and winning the remaining five seats. The people of the state are fed up with the misrule of the TMC and after the RG Kar incident, the state government stands exposed," BJP leader Rahul Sinha said. The bypolls will be the first litmus test for all the major political parties, especially the TMC, the BJP, and the CPI(M), following the two-month-long protests by doctors seeking justice for their colleague in the RG Kar case. Junior doctors began a 'cease-work' strike on August 9 after the alleged rape and murder of a fellow medic at RG Kar Hospital, transitioning to a hunger strike on October 5 after nearly 50 days of 'cease work' in two phases. They have been on a fast-unto-death for the past 15 days, demanding justice for their deceased colleague and systemic changes in the state's healthcare infrastructure. As of now, six doctors participating in the hunger strike have been hospitalised due to deteriorating health, while eight others remain on an indefinite fast, urging the state government to take constructive action by October 21 to resolve the situation.
