Maharashtra Mayors demand more pay, state honors

The Mayors' council which met on Saturday has demanded more pay, more powers and state honors now. The council will meet CM Devendra Fadnavis in the matter.


The Maharashtra Mayor's Council is a council made up of Mayors from across the state. The council met at Juhu on Saturday where the above resolutions were passed. The Council was chaired by Mumbai Mayor Snehal Ambekar where problems faced by first citizens were discussed.


Members expressed that Mayor's have comparatively less powers compared to the administration. They demanded more powers and complained that the state government had not taken notice of their demands in the past.


Among the resolutions passed, it was demanded that Mayor's compensation be increased to Rs 25,000 and that of corporators be increased to Rs 15,000, they be given pension, the compensation for municipal corporations be doubled. They have also demanded that Mayor's or ex-Mayors, on their death, be given full state honors. Besides, they also reiterated the controversial demand of providing red beacon to their cars.
