Nisha Kasabe was admitted to a civic hospital in Mulund for fever, was shifted to another facility where she died; kin allege there were no doctors in the first hospital

A day after a 26-year-old pregnant woman died in Veer Savarkar Hospital, Mulund, her family filed a police complaint alleging medical negligence on Wednesday demanding an FIR against those responsible. The Mulund police have assured the family of a probe.

Local resident Nisha Kasabe was taken to Shrimati S J Dosa Chachani Maternity Home in Mulund West after she complained of joint pain and mild fever on Monday afternoon. Her husband Nitin said she was doing well and had food in the evening. But her health started deteriorating and she suffered severe diarrhoea. She was shifted to Veer Savarkar Hospital where she died around 3.30 am.
Nitin has alleged that there were no doctors in the maternity home when Nisha was sinking and that’s why she was shifted to another hospital. “If there were proper medical care available, why her health turned bad within a few hours. We want to know what treatment was given to her. We believe there was negligence which resulted in Nisha’s death,” said her brother-in-law Sachin Kasbe.
The Kasbe family approached the cops with local MLA Mihir Kotecha. “We want cops to find out what exactly happened on that night which led to the unfortunate death of the lady. Strict action should be taken against such officials and doctors,” said legislator Kotecha.
Senior inspector Vijay Bhise of Mulund police station told mid-day, “We have received the family’s complaint. As of now, we have registered an accidental death report [ADR]. We are writing to the BMC to give the details of the duty hours of officials and the internal inquiry they are conducting. We will take action accordingly.”
Asked what action they have taken in the case, Dr Mangala Gomare, BMC’s executive health officer, said, “We are awaiting the post-mortem report to find out the reason for the death, which will reveal the exact cause for such rapid deterioration of her health. Meanwhile, we have launched an inquiry to find out whether there was any negligence on our part.”
