Seven residents from two families in Badrinath building in Khar West have contracted Covid-19 and the structure has been sealed by the civic body. All infected residents were vaccinated with Covaxin or Covishield and have completed 15 days post-vaccination. Out of seven, three are senior citizens and none has serious comorbidities.

The development further underlines the fact that fully vaccinated people can get infected, too. The H west ward sealed the Badrinath building on 15th road, near Khar Gymkhana on September 25. “Members from two families from the third and fourth floors tested positive for Covid-19. All of them took vaccines in different months and from different centres,” said Alka Kerkar, local corporator.
“A youth from one of the families developed symptoms and so his parents were tested, too. All three tested positive on and before September 21. Reports of members of the other family came on September 25,” said a relative of one of the infected residents on condition of anonymity. A BMC health official said, “One resident used to travel to work in Andheri in a cab and went shopping to a nearby market. Another from the other family visited a restaurant after which he developed symptoms and then other members of his family tested positive.”

“No one has serious symptoms, all are currently isolated at home. The building is sealed as it has more than five cases,” said Vinayak Vispute, assistant commissioner, H West ward. Currently, there are over 44 sealed floors in the H west ward. Vispute added, “There is no data for the fully vaccinated who got infected. We should also consider age and comorbidities as factors in such cases.”
‘Roaming without masks’
Anandini Thakoor, managing trustee of Khar Residents’ Association, said, “We are getting messages and residents are scared now. But in general, people are behaving like there is no Covid-19. No one is serious and people are out on roads without masks. People are relaxed and think they will not be infected after being fully vaccinated. One should follow the norms.”
