Mumbai reported 158 new Coronavirus infections on Tuesday, more than double the previous day’s rise, the BMC said. There were no fatalities, it said.  The city had recorded 74 new COVID-19 infections on Monday. In this month, Mumbai has logged a three-digit rise in cases in 13 days. The virus has claimed three lives so far in May. The city’s caseload reached 10,61,846, while the death toll remained the same at 19,566.


With 8,723 tests conducted in the last 24 hours, the total of Coronavirus tests conducted so far increased to 1,70,24,941. Of 197 new patients, only five were symptomatic and admitted to hospital, while one of them was put on oxygen support, the BMC said. Only 25 out of the 24,944 hospital beds earmarked for COVID patients are occupied in the city. The number of recovered patients jumped to 10,41,348, with 122 patients being discharged from hospitals on Tuesday.


266 fresh cases in state


Meanwhile, Maharashtra recorded 266 new Coronavirus infections, up from 129 cases recorded a day earlier, taking the infection tally of the state to 78,81,235. With no fatality reported on account of the pandemic, the death toll remained unchanged at 1,47,855 for the second consecutive day, a health department official said.

So far, 77,31,829 people have recovered in the state including 241 since Monday evening. Maharashtra’s active caseload stood at 1,551, up from 1,526 on Monday, showed state government data. There are no active cases at present in the districts of Satara, Sangli, Nandurbar, Dhule, Jalna, Latur, Hingoli, Osmanabad, Akola, Buldhana, Bhandara and Gondia. The COVID-19 death rate in the state is 1.87 per cent. The number of Coronavirus tests conducted in the state rose to 8,05,72,867, including 20,857 conducted since Monday evening.
