COVID-19: For first time since September, Maharashtra sees over 20,000 cases

With the central government calling the rise in COVID-19 cases in the city a second wave of infections, the state for the first time since September recorded more than 20,000 daily cases.  Even the city crossed the 2,000-cases mark as the civic administration asked its ward officials to activate as many quarantine and isolation facilities possible and keep a continuous check on those who are under home quarantine.


The state recorded 23,176 new cases on Wednesday taking the total tally to 23.70 lakh. The deaths also saw a jump in the past 24 hours with the state recording 84 fatalities, taking the death toll to 53,080.


On Wednesday, the city saw 2,377 fresh cases. The Thane Municipal Corporation, Navi Mumbai and Kalyan-Dombivli Corporation recorded 516, 367 and 637 fresh cases respectively, in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). 


The state’s recovery rate has dropped and it stands at 91.26 per cent with 9,138 patients discharged on Wednesday. The state has a total of 1,527,60 active cases. Since March last year, about 1.78 crore laboratory samples have been collected till date, out of which 23.70 lakh have tested positive with a 13.29 per cent positivity rate. Mumbai’s recovery rate too has dropped and stands at 92 per cent while the doubling rate period has dropped owing to increase in cases and now stands at 145 days. Whereas, the city’s overall growth rate has increased in the last one week and it currently stands at 0.48 per cent. The city has a total of 3.49 lakh cases and 36.14 lakh tests have been conducted so far.

The silver lining is that the state’s mortality rate is steady at around 2.24 per cent and till date there have been 53,080 COVID-related deaths. The number of deaths due to other causes in the state is 1,276 so far. These deaths are of patients who had tested positive but later turned negative and died due to other complications. 

According to the state government’s data, there were 84 COVID-related deaths in the state. The MMR recorded a total of 21 deaths, with Mumbai and Ulhasnagar corporation recording eight deaths each, Panvel three and one each in Navi Mumbai and Raigad. Mumbai civic officials said out of the eight deaths, six patients were suffering from other ailments and all of them were senior citizens.
