While colleges in Maharashtra are to resume today, Mumbai colleges will not reopen until the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) makes a decision. The civic body has informed Mumbai University that a decision on reopening Mumbai colleges would be taken by February 22.

In a circular dated February 12 Mumbai University informed the colleges about the same. “Colleges in Palghar and Raigad are set to re-open. However, Mumbai is being cautious about the reopening of colleges,” said an MU official.

Colleges under Thane district which covers Thane (Urban and Rural), Navi Mumbai, Mira-Bhayander, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar corporations, will also not re-open from Monday, reported The Indian Express.

“We are assessing the Covid-19 situation locally and not re-starting colleges from February 15. In rural parts, we may start (colleges) in a week,” Thane district collector Rajesh Narvekar said.

Colleges in Raigad and Palghar under MU to reopen today. Colleges in Ratnagiri, however, will not resume.

Colleges in the state will reopen February 15 onwards at half the capacity, the Higher and Technical Education Minister Uday Samant had earlier said. “Reopening will be done in phases, with the first phase scheduled from February 15 to March 5. The state will review the situation after phase one and decide on a future plan. All colleges will have to follow guidelines issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC) on November 5, 2020,” Samant had said.
