Mumbai is full of animal welfare NGO that routinely take in stray animals and care for them. However, a Bhandup-based couple was in for a rude shock when none of them heeded their requests to save four puppies. However, they were helped by Pune-based activists, who are now taking care of the puppies till they are adopted.

Truptee Satam and her husband Parijat Bhalekar, had rescued the pups approximately a month ago. The mother of the puppies, who were born in a litter of nine, was attacked one night by a male dog that killed five of the pups. Satam and her husband gave sheltered the dogs for around a week and then contacted NGOs for help.

“Societies and various NGOs claiming to work for animal welfare are not really true. My husband and I struggled to find an NGO that could help us look for a foster home, but none of them helped us. Moreover, one of the well-known NGOs asked us to pay Rs 250 per puppy per day,” said Satam.

Satam then got in touch with Blue Cross Hospital in Pune, which asked her to contact animal activists Sandhya Teewari and Aarti Rai. But Satam’s troubles were still not over, “A fortnight after I finally received help from the activists, radio cabs did not agree to ply the puppies to Pune. Finally, we decided to drive them in our car itself.” Teewari and Rai are currently taking care of the dogs, and have also made posters to secure a forever home for them.
