Diverging from the conventional jugalbandi, Indian classical music aficionados are in for a treat this Saturday, in the form of a tigalbandi performance at a Juhu venue. Here, three instruments and three artistes, Pandit Mormukut and Manoj Kedia (on sitar and sarod), accompanied by Anuradha Pal (on tabla) will deliver exclusive compositions. Pal, tabla maestro, and founder of Anuradha Pal Cultural Foundation (APCF), reveals about this concept, “While jugalbandi is a common term, the significance of a tigalbandi lies in its distinctiveness. This tigalbandi event will present special compositions as a tribute to the musical masters.”

The performance will be part of APCF’s Arpanotsav festival. The annual music festival pays homage to Pal’s late guru, Ustad Alla Rakha as well as her late parents — pharmaceuticals doyen Devinder Pal and Ila Pal, who was a well-known painter and author. This celebration of music featuring prominent musicians in interesting combinations and thematic presentations has been underway since 2016.

Pal and Bandhu have been hailed as amongst the most exciting tigalbandi — a combination of musical styles, spontaneous creativity and complementing musicality. The duo has successfully performed at several prestigious stages accompanied by great tabla wizards like Pandit Kishan Maharaj, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Pandit Samta Prasad, Pandit Swapan Chowdhury and Pandit Shambhu Dayal Kedia. Pal is revered globally for her virtuosic repertoire, original musical innovations, rare artistry and live wire performances, that make an instant connection with world audiences.

She is looking forward to presenting the tigalbandi with the Kedia brothers. “The audience is in for a musical treat as even though they will hear three instruments, they will feel the oneness of thought and heightened musicality,” she says. The festival welcomes the general public and operates on a ticketless model, aiming to foster a deeper appreciation for Indian classical music and drive social transformation through the therapeutic power of music. While accessible to individuals of all backgrounds and ages, Pal extends a special invitation to the youth, “We especially encourage and reach out to young children from schools and colleges to attend in order to develop the next generation of Kaansens (discerning listeners of Indian classical music).”

On: January 13; 6.30 pm onwards
At: Birla Garden, Birla Lane, near Hotel Tulip Star, Juhu
