If you ask students to pick a subject that they dislike the most, mathematics or science are most likely to be their answers. And according to Harsha Atri, engineer and co-founder of ScienceUtsav, the reason for this is the manner in which these subjects are taught by many teachers. “Science is supposed to be fun, and not burdensome. But unfortunately, children fear it.” Even as science enthusiasts, Atri and his college friend Shashank Karnam shared the same concerns while growing up. “Hence, we founded the platform ScienceUtsav that aimed at introducing science to children in a fun way,” he adds.

The Bengaluru-based company is coming to Nerul this weekend with one of its most loved events — a science fair. The two-day immersive experience for kids will encourage them to learn while engaging in experiments with experts. “We host this event across the country, including Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai. For this edition in Nerul, we’re expecting nearly thousand people,” Atri informs us, adding, “We have also collaborated with schools like Don Bosco and Sanjivani, where we’ll have our trained teachers conduct sessions with school children. In the end, we offer kids tickets to attend our events. We are open to hosting the same in other schools, as long as they contact us before the event begins.”

There will be five experiment tables, where children will be assisted by experts to carry out experiments. “The theme is science of wizardry, meaning any form of science that can come across as magical. Hence, activities are planned around the same. One such experiment is on the dry ice bubble table, where kids will try to make the white bubbles ooze out. Another one focuses on acids and bases, and how a little mix-and-match can produce magical reactions,” he says.

Another interesting experiments is the toy box. “The toy box is one of the most interesting ideas. Kids will create a box in which when you insert a coin, the coin disappears. If they wish, they can even take it home. Our aim is to find solutions to the challenges that Shashank and I faced while understanding concepts as kids,” he signs off.
