The reopening of cinemas after a long Covid-19 lockdown brought about a cheer for the movie enthusiasts and set the cash registers ringing once again at the box office. Although most of the year was spent watching movies on the OTT platform, Sooryavanshi changed the trend with heavy footfalls returning to the theatres. Thereafter, quite a few movies got theatrical release in the months of November and December. Some fared beyond expectations, while others tanked at the box office. Let's take a look at the box office performances of each.

Sooryavanshi

Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif's cop drama surpassed all expectations as it collected a total of whopping Rs 195.04 crore in 5 weeks of its theatrical run in India. Thereafter, even though the film released on Netflix, footfalls continued at the theatres adding to the film's total collection. This was phenomenal for a film that was the first to release in theatres after the lockdown. The film continued to attract the audience to the theatres despite the release of Bunty Aur Babli 2, Antim: The Final Truth and Satyameva Jayate 2, and continued to mint money at the box office.

Bunty Aur Babli 2

The sequel to Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji's heist drama had a lukewarm response from the audience. The film, that was panned by critics, raked in a lack-lustre total of Rs 12.41 crore in two weeks.

Satyameva Jayate 2

John Abraham's triple role, high-octane action sequences and powerful dialogues could not help the case of this sequel much. The film opened at Rs 3.60 crore on Thursday and further saw a huge decline after Antim: The Final Truth released on Friday. Satyameva Jayate 2's total collection stands at Rs 13.26 crore.

Antim: The Final Truth

Salman Khan and Aayush Sharma's gangster drama collected a satisfactory total of Rs 38.97 crore. The film is a tale of two powerful men with polar opposite ideologies; one a cop, played by Salman, and the other a gangster, portrayed by Aayush.

Tadap

Ahan Shetty and Tara Sutaria's romantic action drama held up well and ended up with a total of Rs 26.11 crore at the box office. The film did not have competition around its release date, but the collections declined with Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui hitting the screens in the following week.

Ayushmann Khurrana and Vaani Kapoor's unconventional love story attracted the audience to the theatres. The film opened to a lukewarm response at the box office, but picked up over the weekend. The figures declined with the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home and the film currently stands at a total of Rs 22.61 crore.

Spider-Man: No Way Home

The latest Spider-Man film stormed the Indian box office and smashed multiple records. It even beat Sooryavanshi on the opening day collection. Moreover, Spider-Man: No Way Home has the biggest-ever Day 1 collection for Sony Pictures Entertainment India. It has garnered 3.5 times the amount Spider-Man: Far From Home collected in 2019. It has had the second biggest opening in the history of Hollywood releases in India. Currently, the total collection of Spider-Man: No Way Home stands at Rs. 189. 67 crore.

A lot of expectations were riding on the film after the overwhelming positive response but unfortunately, it didn't translate into numbers. With cinemas in Delhi shutting down, the dent only grew bigger. Kabir Khan's film is touted to have a staggering budget of over Rs. 200 crore but the total collections so far are only Rs. 71.87 crore.
