Aamir Khan made his acting debut with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak in 1988, and his debut as a producer in 2001 with Lagaan. The star has always been known for his daring film choices, both as an actor and as a producer. As he turns 57, we look at some of his riskiest and rousing turns as the latter.

Lagaan (2001)

Of course, this was the film that gave birth to Aamir Khan Productions. It’s not just a film about cricket, it’s the ultimate story of hope and triumph, slavery and freedom. 11 underdogs put their village and lives at stake to battle the snooty British that believe they can do no wrong. One does, and the fate on both the sides change forever, and so does cinema, and so does Khan’s career. 

Taare Zameen Par (2007)

A film about Dyslexia and blurred visions became one of the most watched films of 2007. Khan was not the center of attraction for his directorial debut they he also produced, a 12-year boy was. He let him steal the thunder and the spotlight give him his moment of glory. 

Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na (2008)

A boy and a girl are best friends before realising they were always meant to be together. The plot was primitive, but the leads were piquant and the treatment fresh and fragrant. Even the jaded airport climax was woven imaginatively into the narrative. Unlike the title, everyone knew the fate of this splendid surprise of 2008.

Peepli Live (2010)

A satire on farmers’s suicide, this gem benefited from the casting of mostly unknown stars, who camouflaged themselves into the roles of helpless villagers struggling to make ends meet. Not too many mainstream stars would back such subjects as producers.

Delhi Belly (2011)

The initial reactions suggested shock and surprise, at the audacity of the boldness it had on display, at the unhinged and unapologetic innuendos and expletives that felt like poetry. Khan was enjoying the promotional stints, suggesting he’s aware of that fate already. It was nothing but sheer genius, both the film and the filmmaker’s vision.
