Sources say, the inquiry was launched based on a complaint filed by BJP MP Kirit Somaiya in the Azad Maidan police station in August last year regarding alleged corruption in the appointment of the contractor overseeing the management of Covid centres across the city

In his complaint, Somaiya had alleged that the contract to set up two Jumbo Covid Centres in Dahisar and Worli was given to a company despite it having any experience in providing healthcare facilities or medical services. He had alleged that the contract was allegedly recieved on the basis of forged documents, including its partnership deed

Sources claimed the case involves a particular leader who is extremely close to Maharashtra political party chief
