Attend a three-day festival in Mumbai that celebrates Sufi traditions

Aficionados of Sufi music have much to rejoice about, as Sama'a, an upcoming music festival hosted by the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA), brings three days of engaging performances.

Munnawar Masoom and Group

Kicking things off is a qawwali and ghazal presentation by Munnawar Masoom and Group, who will bring to life the works of celebrated Sufi mystics and poets. The group's interactive style makes it easy for the audience to understand the meaning of the lyrics. On day two, Kailash Kher, known for his raw, soulful voice, will take the stage with his band, Kailasa. His presentation will include traditional Sufiana compositions, as well as his popular Bollywood tracks.

"My voice, and the kind of music we make took a while to gain mainstream acceptance. But slowly, musical tastes have changed, and even the youth now enjoy music that's rooted in Sufism. That's probably because the words of Sufi legends are relevant even today," he says.

The festival will close with the screening of Sufi Soul: The Mystic Music of Islam, a documentary written and presented by author William Dalrymple. This will be followed by a performance by Israeli poet, composer and singer Shye Ben Tzur in collaboration with The Rajasthan Express. Expect a night of Hebrew poetry, qawwali and Rajasthani folk music.
