A Jaipur-based fashion graduate who finds textures in songs is working with musical artistes to develop song-inspired apparel

Ramrakhani’s choice of apparel and fabric depends on the artiste’s music and personal style

Disha Ramrakhani, a 24-year-old graduate from Pearl Academy, Jaipur, has combined her interests in music and fashion through Disha R. (Dot), a venture that turns songs into apparel. The first time she attempted this was in 2017, she says, while working on a design project in college. “I associated sounds in songs with different textures, and started thinking of how people could make them a part of their everyday wear,” says Ramrakhani.

To develop designs, Ramrakhani first has to procure official licenses from artistes to use their songs, and her choice of apparel, which includes hoodie kurtas with batik and embroidery work, depends on the artiste’s personal style. “The fabric also will vary depending on the song and the artiste,” says Ramrakhani. “I associate the artiste’s vocal texture with the fabric.”

The young entrepreneur has collaborated with rapper Mission Recovery and will be releasing new apparel with Delhi-based artiste Sparsh Shikhar Sinha soon. “I work with creators whose art inspires me. I am always looking for someone with a vivid back story who has gone out of their comfort zone to create something moving,” she says.  While overwhelmed by responses from musicians from the independent music scene, Ramrakhani admits that marketing these products has proved to be a challenge.
