Pune: The Balewadi Sports Complex here first shot into the limelight eight years ago when it hosted the Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) back in 2008. The remnants of that CYG are still visible at the Balewadi Sports Complex with every nook and corner of the venue. The external walls of the weightlifting arena are still adorned by Jigrr, the tiger, who was the mascot of that CYG. "There's been no international competitions at the weightlifting venue since 2008 so it hasn't been painted since then," one of the caretakers of the venue told mid-day.
Ranbir forgets his accreditation
Bollywood star and Mumbai City FC team owner Ranbir Kapoor, as usual, got a red carpet welcome at the Balewadi Sports Complex here when he arrived with dad Rishi Kapoor in tow for his team's opening ISL-3 clash against Pune City FC yesterday. However, moments after he stepped into the VVIP enclosure he realised he had forgotten to carry his own. Kapoor Jr promptly sent one of his security guards back to his car to go and get it. Just goes to show that the Bollywood superstar may generally need no introduction, but here he sure needs his accreditation!
Forlan inspires MSSA Academy hockey team
Mumbai City FC's Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan's stylish game, one of which led to the match-winner against FC Pune City in last night's ISL match here inspired a group of young U-16 hockey players from the Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA) Academy participating in the SNBP All-India U-16 national hockey tournament here. The youngsters hope to be inspired by Forlan's heroics in their quarter-finals. "We love South American footballers like Neymar and Lionel Messi. Forlan is a hero too. Watching him live was exciting. We are playing our quarter-final against Madhya Pradesh next at this same venue and I hope my team can be inspired by Forlan and do well in the knockouts," said an excited Marven Pereira, skipper of the MSSA Academy.
