Vinicius Jr stands in support of Barca trio after racial abuse by Madrid fans

Vinicius Jr, a player who has been the target of many racial abuse incidents during his tenure in Spain, spoke out in support of Lamine Yamal, Ansu Fati and Raphina after the trio were the subject of racist insults following Barcelona’s 4-0 win over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday.  “It's regrettable what happened yesterday at the Bernabéu with racist insults. There is no place for these criminals in our society. All my support to Lamine, Ansu and Raphinha. I know that Madrid and the police will do things to identify and punish the guilty!!,” read the post by the Brazilian on X. On the night Lamine Yamal became the youngest player to ever score in an El Clasico, videos of the Spaniard being the subject of racist abuse started flooding social media. Lamine Yamal’s goal was Barcelona’s third goal during their 4-0 routing of Real Madrid. The Spaniard followed his goal with Vinicius Jr’s trademark celebration which is when the incident took place.  Also Read: Man Utd lose 1-2 to West Ham; Chelsea win Real Madrid released a strongly worded statement condemning fans for the ‘deeply regrettable’ behaviour which was on display and have opened an investigation to identify the perpetrators. “Real Madrid strongly condemns any kind of behaviour involving racism, xenophobia or violence in football and sport, and deeply regrets the insults that a few fans uttered last night in one of the corners of the stadium. “Real Madrid has opened an investigation in order to locate and identify the perpetrators of these deplorable and despicable insults so that the appropriate disciplinary and judicial measures can be taken,” read the statement by Real Madrid on their website. EPL: Arsenal and Liverpool share spoils in fiery 2-2 draw

Arsenal and Liverpool battled it out for a frustrating 2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. The result sees Manchester City attain the top spot in the Premier League table.  In what can only be described as a fiery encounter, Bukayo Saka, making his first appearance after suffering an injury during the October international break, did not take long to open the account on the night as he scored the opening goal nine minutes into the game.  Saka was fed an over the top ball by Ben White which he cut back onto his left foot, completely bypassing Robertson in the process, and hit the back of the net.  The game was being played at a very high tempo and it did not take long for Liverpool to come back into the game. Trent Alexander Arnold’s darting ball from the corner flag found Luis Diaz who nudged the ball onto a waiting Virgil Van Dijk who made no mistake in equalizing the game in the 18th minute.  Arsenal responded with a set piece of their own in the 43rd minute when Declan Rice’s pinpoint cross found Mikel Merino who headed the Gunners into the lead. It was the Spaniard’s first goal for the club since making the switch to North London in August and helped Arsenal take the 2-1 lead into half-time.  Also Read: ‘This is Arsenal’s year’ Disaster struck for Mikel Arteta in the second-half as Arsenal’s injury list grew even further. Gabriel Magalhaes suffered a knee injury and despite an effort to stay in the game had to be subbed off which will be a cause for concern given his importance to the side.  With the exit of Magalhaes, Liverpool grew into the match and started dominating possession. After repeated attempts, Arne Slot’s side finally broke through in the 84th minute thanks to Salah’s simple finish after the Egyptian was squared the ball by Darwin Nunez in a great position read outside the six-yard box.  Despite a seven minute added period in regulation time, no winner availed and both teams had to settle for a point. 'We are hurt': Ancelotti

After a crushing loss to Barcelona, Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti rues the missed chances in the La Liga El Clasico and said his side have to overcome the deficit as the season is long with a lot of games. After losing all four of their last competitive meetings with old enemies Real Madrid, Barcelona finally conquered the Santiago Bernabeu to the tune of a resounding 4-0 victory, ending Madrid’s 42-match unbeaten streak. Carlo Ancelotti “At 0-0, it was an even game and we played with intensity in the first half. We could have scored, but we didn’t. We had our chances to take the lead. After they scored, we lost our momentum. Then they had space at 0-2, we had to take risks with one-on-ones at the back and they created several chances on the counter. We looked good in the first half and we have to continue in that vein. We are hurt, it’s a hard and difficult moment,” Ancelotti said. “The season is long, we can’t give up and we have to learn from this defeat. We learned from the last one and we can apply the same theory now. Now we have to overcome the deficit because the season is long with a lot of games. We can do better and I’m sure we will,” he added. The first half began with the ball moving from one area to the other and the first chance fell to the visitors after thirteen minutes in a one-on-one in which Lunin was more accurate than Lamine Yamal. Then in the second half, Lewandowski’s brace in the 54th and 56th minutes made it difficult for Madrid, who could have reduced the deficit when Mbappe’s one-on-one with Inaki Pena, but the latter was able to parry the ball away. 8No. of times Mbappe was caught offside in the match v Barca This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Man Utd lose 1-2 to West Ham; Chelsea win

West Ham piled more pressure on beleaguered Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag with a dramatic 2-1 win on Sunday as Cole Palmer inspired Chelsea to a victory by the same scoreline over Newcastle.  Tottenham were beaten 1-0 at Crystal Palace, who picked up their first win of the season. Ten Hag was left to rue a familiar lack of ruthlessness as United’s fourth league defeat in nine games will spark further speculation on how long he will be given to turn the Red Devils’ fortunes around.  The visitors should have been out of sight by half-time at the London Stadium. Alejandro Garnacho hit the woodwork inside two minutes and Edson Alvarez also headed off his own crossbar. But it was Diogo Dalot who missed the biggest chance when the Portuguese international somehow fired over with the goal gaping. Under-fire West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui showed his disgust with the Hammers’ first-half display by making three substitutions at the break.  Crysencio Summerville was one of those introduced and he slid in to open the scoring against the run of play on 74 minutes. Casemiro brought United level nine minutes from time with a header from point-blank range. But there was late drama when VAR intervened for a foul on Danny Ings by Matthijs de Ligt. Jarrod Bowen smashed in the resulting spot-kick to take West Ham above United, who sink to 14th in the table. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Vinicius Jr is frontrunner as Ballon d’Or looks beyond Ronaldo and Messi

No Lionel Messi. No Cristiano Ronaldo. When the Ballon d’Or is presented at a gala ceremony in Paris on Monday, it will feel like the start of a new era in football. There is also a sense of void now that one of sport’s most engrossing rivalries is likely over. Messi and Ronaldo won football’s most prestigious individual award a combined 13 times over 16 years of unprecedented dominance. Neither has been nominated this year. Instead, Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior is the favourite to be crowned the world’s best player and become the first winner born this century. He underlined his credentials this week with a stunning Champions League hat-trick against Borussia Dortmund. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Dortmund slump to another loss as Leipzig top league

Borussia Dortmund’s awful away form continued in a 2-1 loss to Augsburg in the Bundesliga that increases the pressure on coach Nuri Sahin. Dortmund’s fourth loss in a row in away games in all competitions — including 5-2 at Real Madrid on Tuesday — left the team seven points off new Bundesliga leader Leipzig. The team’s poor form has key players and sporting director Sebastian Kehl at a loss. “I’m annoyed by the many goals we’re conceding,” Kehl said. “We’ve been addressing this intensively but now we’re standing here having to explain things that I can’t explain.” Alexis Claude-Maurice made his first start since joining Augsburg in August and rewarded his new team with two goals from distance to turn the game around. Meanwhile, Leipzig came back in the second-half to beat Freiburg 3-1. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. ISL: Mumbai City FC settle for 1-1 draw with Odisha

Sergio Lobera’s return to the island city culminated in a 1-1 draw between Mumbai City FC and Odisha FC at the Mumbai Football Arena in the Indian Super League (ISL) on Sunday as goals by talismanic strikers Roy Krishna and Nikolaos Karelis resulted in both teams settling for a point each. Lobera was the happier of the two coaches at the onset of the game, with his frontline pressing forward and inflicting pressure on the Mumbai City FC defence. Their charge was led by Fijian forward Roy Krishna, spearheading by example and he reaped the rewards for the same in the 14th minute. As the Islanders looked to build from the back, Valpuia played a lobbed pass to goalkeeper Phurba Lachenpa. The custodian brought the ball down but was unable to keep control over the possession, and Krishna lapped upon the opportunity by sprinting ahead, placing the ball into the back of the net. Also Read: Mumbai City register 2-1 win over FC Goa The home team began functioning in the trademark manner, with Lallianzuala Chhangte taking the ball ahead and squaring up passes at the centre for the striker. His interlinking with Karelis was a treat for the home fans, and one such move brought them the equaliser in the 23rd minute.  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. ISL: NorthEast United FC thrash Jamshedpur FC 5-0 for the biggest-ever win

Alaaeddine Ajaraie and Parthib Gogoi scored a double each as NorthEast United FC produced a majestic performance at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium here on Saturday, to round off a thoroughly convincing 5-0 victory against Jamshedpur FC in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25.  Ajaraie scored in the 5th and 90th minutes while Parthib Gogoi found the back of the net in the 44th minute and 55th minutes for the team from Northeast India. Macarton Nickson contributed a goal in the 82nd minute to make it their biggest win in ISL. The Highlanders registered their second win of the campaign in great style, as their free-flowing frontline got together to break past the Jamshedpur FC defence multiple times across both halves. This is the club’s biggest win in ISL history and the first time they have scored five goals in a game in the competition as well. They were also helped with the Red Miners being reduced to 10 men with defender Stephen Eze getting sent off in the 29th minute. However, the Juan Pedro Benali-coached team had already gotten the lead thanks to the opening strike five minutes into the game by Ajaraie. Buanthanglun Samte set up a rather straightforward pass for Ajaraie on the left flank. The dynamic attacker backed his instincts to take a shot at goal from a distance and his perfect attempt at netting the ball into the top right corner with a classic finish brought the spectators to the edge of their seats and left them awestruck. Also Read: IN PHOTOS: Kumar Sangakkara's notable records Two minutes later, Mohammed Bemammer found Ajaraie at the appropriate goal-scoring position to double the lead of the Highlanders. Inside the centre of the 18-yard box, Ajaraie made a solid effort but it didn’t culminate in a strike. Eze getting shown a second yellow card just before the half-hour mark turned the tide in NorthEast United's favour with Benali’s men maintaining an absolute stronghold over the flow of the game thereafter. Parthib Gogoi made it 2-0 for NorthEast United as he brought up a brace to reach 10 ISL goals – the most by any player in the league before turning 22. Though last year he floored the fans with his long-range stunners, Gogoi has added finer elements to his game and those were evident across his two goals here. He made a run inside the box and met Ajaraie’s squared-up pass perfectly to slot it into the bottom right corner in the 44th minute. Ten minutes into the second half, it was Jithin M.S. who turned the provider for Gogoi, finding him in an exemplary situation inside the box. The latter didn’t disappoint, landing the ball into the top left corner to triple the team’s lead. NorthEast United FC refused to take their foot off the pedal despite gaining a comfortable lead. Substitute Macarton Nickson made an instant impact, joining the goal-scoring frenzy by depositing the ball into the top right corner from the edge of the box through an assist by Hamza Regragui in the 82nd minute. Ajaraie wrapped up the proceedings by nailing the fifth goal of the game in the 90th minute. It was a consequence of a quick counter-attack by the Highlanders, set up by Michel Zabaco who spotted the forward at the centre of the box. NorthEast United FC will next play against Odisha FC on November 3, whereas Jamshedpur FC are set to lock horns with Chennaiyin FC the following day, i.e. November 4. ISL: Hyderabad FC ride on Paulista’s brace to beat Mohammedan SC 4-0

A brace of goals by Allan Paulista and one each from Stefan Sapic and Parag Shrivas helped Hyderabad FC hammer Mohammedan SC 4-0 to register their first win of the 2024-25 season of the Indian Super League (ISL) at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan here on Saturday. On a night in which the hosts took the field in search of their maiden home win, Paulista scored a brilliant brace with Sapic and Shrivas also joining the goal-scoring bonanza.  Thangboi Singto’s men initiated the groundwork for a brilliant win when Allan Paulista capitalized on Padam Chettri’s mistake to hand the visitors an early lead in the fourth minute. The Brazilian was lurking in the penalty area when Padam failed to clear his lines following a pass from Florent Ogier. Paulista saw the opportunity and tucked it past the goalkeeper. Hyderabad FC piled more pressure on Mohammedan SC’s backline and they were duly rewarded in the 12th minute when Stefan Sapic rose the highest to head home the second goal from a Cy Goddard corner. Hyderabad FC’s onslaught kept going as the hosts were unable to match their intensity and left acres of space in midfield. Three minutes after the second goal, Paulista added another to his tally after Parag Shrivas found the Brazilian unmarked in the final third. Also Read: Brendon McCullum praises Pakistan’s spin mastery, calls England’s loss a ‘missed opportunity' The 25-year-old hammered the ball home, beating Padam all ends up. Hyderabad FC scripted history as they raced to a 3-0 lead in just 14 minutes and 38 seconds which is the second-fastest in ISL history. Hyderabad FC could have extended their lead when Andrei Alba found himself in space right at the edge of the penalty area. But the Brazilian scuffed his shot wide. In the first half, Mohammedan SC were slower to react to second balls, they left plenty of space while defending and lacked that spark in attack. Despite having the lion’s share of possession they went into the break trailing 3-0 at home. The second half saw Mohammedan SC tactician Andrey Chernyshov turn to his bench as he brought on Cesar Manzoki, Mohammed Irshad, and Makan Chothe to solidify all three departments. Despite the changes, the visitors added another goal to their scoresheet in the 51st minute when Parag Shrivas combined with Alba to produce a long-range missile. The young defender swerved the ball straight into the top right corner, leaving Padam and Mohammedan SC backline completely bamboozled. It was a special moment for the youngster as he scored his maiden ISL goal. Right after conceding their fourth goal, the hosts had a great chance to pull one back when Manzoki found himself in space in the box but his subsequent effort struck the post. Later Bikash Singh saw his chance go begging following Alexis Gomez’s excellent cross. In the last 20 minutes of the game, Mohammedan SC threw bodies forward in search of goals but unfortunately, it was just not their night as Hyderabad FC registered their second clean sheet and first win of the season. After this win, Hyderabad FC will host Mohun Bagan Super Giant on October 30. Meanwhile, Mohammedan SC will be in action again in the Kolkata Derby against East Bengal on November 9 in an away fixture. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Robert Lewandowski double as Barcelona shred Madrid in La Liga Clasico

Robert Lewandowski struck twice in two minutes as Barcelona crushed rivals Real Madrid 4-0 on Saturday, inflicting the Spanish champions' first La Liga defeat in over a year. Teenage winger Lamine Yamal and Raphinha completed the rout, while Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe had two goals ruled out for offside on a frustrating first Clasico appearance for Los Blancos, who now trail league leaders Barcelona by six points. France captain Mbappe was consistently outwitted by the visitors' high defensive line to the chagrin of the exasperated Santiago Bernabeu crowd, whose mood darkened as Barcelona hit four second-half goals. Barcelona snapped Madrid's 42-match unbeaten streak in La Liga, one game short of the Catalan giants' all-time record, adding further shine to their triumph.  "It's a hard moment, a tough moment when you lose a game, (especially after) so many unbeaten," admitted Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti. His counterpart Hansi Flick has whipped Barcelona into shape in just a matter of months and in ending a run of four Clasico defeats, his young side made a statement victory to show how far they have come. "The big objectives are (fought) against the best in the world and we've shown that we've got the ability to beat anyone, that we've got the mentality and that we've changed," said Barcelona goalkeeper Inaki Pena. Ancelotti's game-plan was clear -- defend in numbers and try to spring Mbappe or Vinicius Junior with a long ball into the space behind Barcelona's defence. It led to an intense but repetitive first half, with Barcelona's defence catching Madrid offside on eight occasions. Also Read: "For us to achieve this for the first time is indescribable": Glenn Phillips on NZ's Test series win in India Mbappe hit the side-netting and lobbed over but was offside on both occasions, while Jude Bellingham forced a superb save from Pena, but it would also have been disallowed for offside. "We always play with the back four very high, (regarding Mbappe's goals), it's always like that because the referees don't whistle, so it looks dangerous -- but it's not dangerous," said Flick. At the other end Yamal sent a soft effort at Andriy Lunin when put through on goal by a superb Lewandowski flick. Barcelona were not playing with the fluidity they have demonstrated in recent weeks, culminating in the impressive 4-1 Champions League win over Bayern Munich on Wednesday. Mbappe thought he had broken the deadlock when he got in behind and produced a fine dinked finish over Pena, but yet again the forward was marginally offside and his celebration was cut short. Silence the Bernabeu  Despite the feeling they were constantly menacing Barcelona, Madrid only produced one legal shot in the first half, with Vinicius dragging into the side-netting when he tried to catch Pena out at the near post. Eager for more control, Flick replaced Fermin Lopez with Frenkie de Jong at half-time and Barcelona soon took the lead and never looked back. Marc Casado slipped Lewandowski through and with Madrid defender Ferland Mendy a step behind his team-mates, the Pole was onside. The 36-year-old slotted low past Lunin to silence the Bernabeu, and two minutes later he pounced again. Lewandowski headed home Alejandro Balde's cross to double Barcelona's advantage and net his 14th league goal in 11 games, continuing his stunning revival under Flick afer struggling last season.  Mbappe had a second goal ruled out for offside as Madrid struggled to find a way back in and Pena kept out a low stinging effort from the former Paris Saint-Germain forward. Lewandowski spurned two golden chances to complete his hat-trick, shooting against the post from Raphinha's lay-off and then blazing over after good work by Yamal. Spain's Euro 2024 star Yamal plundered Barcelona's third by rifling home after the surging Raphinha teed him up, with Flick celebrating jubilantly in the dugout. Raphinha completed the rout with a lob over Lunin to leave the Bernabeu reeling. "We played a first half with intensity, we could have scored (but) we lacked some accuracy," said Ancelotti. "When they scored they hit two goals that took all of our energy away, we took more risks at the back and they found a lot more chances on the counter attack. "For 60 minutes we competed very well and we have to forget the last 30." This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies.
