Ramakant Vithal Achrekar was born in 1932 but his playing career was not as distinguished as his coaching career. He started playing cricket in 1943. In 1945, he played club cricket for New Hind Sports Club. He also played for Young Maharashtra XI, Gul Mohar Mills and Mumbai Port. He played in only one first-class cricket match for all-India State Bank against Hyderabad in the Moin-ud-Dowla tournament in 1963–64.

The stalwart Mumbai coach, Ramakant Achrekar, founded Kamath Memorial Cricket Club at Shivaji Park. He had coached and nurtured numerous cricketers, which includes the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Ajit Agarkar, Chandrakant Pandit, Vinod Kambli & Pravin Amre among others.

Ramakant Achrekar had devoted himself to coaching and to uplift the Indian cricket standards. The club is currently run by his daughter Kalpana Murkar and son-in-law Deepak Murkar.

Ramakant Achrekar's body was kept at his residence for people to pay their last respects to the Dronacharya and Padma Shri award-winning coach. Sachin Tendulkar and Chandrakant Pandit, the two students of Ramakant Achrekar were seen carrying the mortal remains of their childhood coach for the final rites.
Ramakant Achrekar's body was kept at Kamath Memorial pitch, Shivaji Park, where he coached aspiring cricketers and was then taken to a nearby crematorium. When the body was taken outside the ground, young boys, who practice there, gave a guard of honour amid chants of 'Amar Rahe'.

Mumbai Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar also came in to pay his respect to the late Ramakant Achrekar.
Politician Raj Thackeray too arrived at Shivaji Park to pay his respect and attend the funeral rites of late Ramakant Achrekar who passed away on January 2 at the age of 86 due to age-old ailments.
Sachin Tendulkar, along with Ramakant Achrekar's other wards like Vinod Kambli, Balwinder Singh Sandhu and Chandrakant Pandit, also took part in the procession to the crematorium, where his body was consigned to flames.
