“It has been decided to restrict the use of Mumbai logo only to players and support staff. This will be the practise going forward. No one else can wear them,” an MCA official told mid-day on Tuesday.

No one, apart from players and coaches, can now sport the Mumbai cricket team logo, the Mumbai Cricket Association’s (MCA) Apex Council decided on Monday.

In short, the red lion crest is sacrosanct.

Earlier, t-shirts with the Mumbai logo would be distributed to even non-playing members.

“It has been decided to restrict the use of Mumbai logo only to players and support staff. This will be the practise going forward. No one else can wear them,” an MCA official told mid-day on Tuesday.

“This decision was long-pending. Finally, it has happened,” said another official.

Rege supports decision

Former Mumbai captain and ex-chairman of selectors of the senior Mumbai team, Milind Rege hailed MCA’s decision.

“This decision was much-needed. The players have to earn the Mumbai logo on the field of play. It was appalling to see any Tom, Dick and Harry wearing the Mumbai jersey at parties. I had raised this issue when I was a Managing Committee member, but I was ridiculed. I support this decision wholeheartedly,” said Rege.

‘A matter of pride’

Meanwhile, another MCA official felt restricting the use of Mumbai logo would hurt the sentiments of MCA members. “Why should the team manager not wear the Mumbai logo? It is a matter of pride for even our club members as they also work towards the well-being of Mumbai cricket

So, I feel this ruling will hurt the sentiments of club members. There could have been a rule where the t-shirt with the MCA logo should not be used off the field,”
he said.
