MAHARASHTRA and Chennai Super Kings batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad will lead the Indian T20I team at the Asian Games to be held in Hangzhou, China from September 19.

And his childhood coach Mohan Jadhav reckons his ward deserves the leadership role.

Gaikwad, 26, who earlier led Maharashtra U-19 and the senior team across all formats in domestic cricket, shouldered captaincy responsibilities when he was appointed Pune’s Dilip Vengsarkar Academy U-14 team’s skipper in 2010.

“Ruturaj definitely has captaincy qualities and that’s why he has been given such a big responsibility to lead the Indian team. I am confident he is capable of leading from the front,” Jadhav told mid-day.com from Pune on Saturday.

“He [Gaikwad] is a very calm cricketer, always maintains focus on his game and is able to take good decisions at the right time. He will do justice to this added responsibility,” Jadhav added.

Gaikwad has represented the country in nine T20Is and one ODI so far.
