Indian team for England ODIs selected purely on performance: Srikkanth

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chairman of selectors Krishnamachari Srikkanth on Saturday said that the selection of the 16-man squad for the ODI series against England was based on the performance of the players.

The squad was announced today after the BCCI selection committee held a meeting in Chennai.

"I think the one day team has been selected again purely on performance, concentrations and conditions prevailing in England and taking into consideration, how we have been performing," Srikkanth said.

"We have selected the team on the basis of the conditions in England and with a lot of deliberation and thought.

Veteran batsman Rahul Dravid has made a surprise comeback into the ODI squad after being on the sidelines for two years.

The last time the 38-year-old played an ODI was in September 2009 against the West Indies during the Champions Trophy in South Africa.

The team, however, will be without off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and the injured Yuvraj Singh.

Harbhajan, who has been ruled out of the remainder of the Test series against England due to an abdominal strain, has been dropped from the squad because of his woeful form in recent times.

Yuvraj has been nursing a broken left index finger suffered during the second Test at Trent Bridge.

M.S. Dhoni will captain the squad, while Virender Sehwag will be the vice-captain.

Sreesanth failed to find a spot as India went with Zaheer Khan, Praveen Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Munaf Patel and R. Vinay Kumar as the five fast bowlers in the squad.

India will play a Twenty20 match on August 31 followed by five ODIs starting on September 3.

The Indian team for the ODI series: M.S. Dhoni (captain), Virender Sehwag (vice-captain), Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Zaheer Khan, R Ashwin, Praveen Kumar, Munaf Patel, Ishant Sharma, Vinay Kumar, Amit Mishra and Parthiv Patel.
