Former India coach Greg Chappell has called for all chat surrounding Jasprit Bumrah’s action to end immediately following India’s splendid win in Perth, where the opening Test ended India’s way on Monday. “By the way, please stop this nonsense of questioning Bumrah’s action. It is unique, but it is unequivocally clean. It demeans a champion performer and the game to even bring it up,” Chappell wrote in his Sydney Morning Herald column on Tuesday. Also Read: It's a perthfect start for India! Like several other former greats, he was disappointed by Australia’s show and hailed India’s brilliance. “India’s bowlers, spearheaded by the lethal Jasprit Bumrah, looked sharper and more menacing. Australia were bundled out for 104 in 52 overs, with Bumrah proving almost unplayable at times,” he wrote while calling centurion Yashasvi Jaiswal an “emerging superstar." Chappell, the former Australia captain, who coached India from 2005 to 2007, added: “The young opener is fearless and appears poised to inherit the mantle of Indian batting excellence, following the likes of Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar.”

26 November,2024 07:53 AM IST | Mumbai | Gordon D’CostaOut of national reckoning for more than two years, Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s experience was in demand among the IPL franchises with Royal Challengers Bengaluru buying him for Rs 10.75 crore as lesser-fancied Indian fast bowlers hit pay dirt on the second day of the mega auction here on Monday. Bhuvneshwar, who will be 35 before the start of next IPL, has 300 wickets from 287 career T20 games and an economy rate of less than eight. But he last played for India during a tour of New Zealand in November 2022 and is considered well past his prime at the international level. However, with at least three Indian pacers needed per team, the pool is not large enough to ensure equal distribution among the 10 teams. 26 November,2024 07:48 AM IST | Jeddah | PTIMumbai pacer Tushar Deshpande, who claimed 42 scalps in 36 IPL games for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), was bought by Rajasthan Royals (RR) for Rs 6.50 crore during the players auction in Jeddah on Monday. Also Read: "I think Uzzie should have owned that moment": Michael Clarke on McSweeney facing first ball Deshpande, who had a base price of Rs 1 crore, was expecting to be picked by CSK again and will now miss legendary captain MS Dhoni’s guidance. “I will miss Mahi bhai a lot. He stood by me during the worst and best of times,” Deshpande told mid-day from Bangalore on Monday. Deshpande underwent surgery on his left ankle last September and is currently doing rehab at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore. He is expecting to make a comeback in January when the Ranji Trophy resumes. “Now that RR have shown great faith in me, I will give my 100 per cent in each game. I am very excited to join the new team and play under Sanju Samson and learn a lot from Rahul Dravid, who has done wonders for India,” Deshpande remarked. Deshpande, 29, represented India in two T20Is under Shubman Gill’s captaincy in Zimbabwe last July. When asked if he expected to get such a big amount while CSK and RR were trying to get him, he said: “I was expecting to get around this much. I was just hoping that somebody would bid for me. I was following the full duration of the auction on Sunday, but my name did not come up. So, I followed it keenly again today.”
26 November,2024 07:42 AM IST | Mumbai | Subodh MayureFormer Australia Test captain Michael Clarke was critical of Usman Khawaja’s decision to allow debutant opener Nathan McSweeney to face the first ball in Australia’s second innings against India, saying the veteran batter had to “own the moment” in Perth. Also Read: Zabardast! After India set them a mammoth target of 534 after declaring their second innings at 487-6, Australia had to deal with a tricky period on Day Three, which started on a false note as McSweeney lasted just four balls before being trapped leg-before wicket by Jasprit Bumrah. “A lot of people don’t like taking first ball, so the opening batters rotate. Khawaja took the first ball in the first innings and now they’re saying it’s McSweeney [for the second innings].” “But I think Uzzie should have said, ‘youngster, get down the other end, even though we’re going to rotate, even though I don’t like taking it, it’s my time’. [He should have said] ‘I’m a senior player. I’m 38 years of age in a week’s time. Listen here, youngster, I know you want to do it, [but] get down there. It’s my turn’. I think Uzzie should have owned that moment,” said Clarke to Sky Sports’ Big Sports Breakfast show. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. 26 November,2024 07:19 AM IST | Dubai | PTIAustralia skipper Pat Cummins admitted on Monday the crushing first Test loss to India “hurt,” but said his team were experienced enough to learn from it and bounce back. The world’s top-ranked Test side were outplayed over all four days at Perth Stadium, managing just 104 in reply to India’s first innings’ 150. They then allowed India to make 487-6 before declaring half-an-hour before the close on Day Three, making a run chase of 534 all-but impossible. “I think you kind of sit in the change room after a loss like that and it hurts,” said Cummins. Familiar situation “When a team declare on you, it’s never an amazing feeling. We’ve all been in these situations before. It’s the nature of being in professional sport, you are going to lose some games. The biggest challenge and the most important thing is how do you bounce back, what’s your next move? Also Read: "I have already said that Kohli does not need us": Jasprit Bumrah “So, that’s what we’ve got to do this week. Clearly, we were well off the mark, there’s a lot to work on. The most important thing is there’s four Test matches to come and how do we make sure that we don’t be in this position again,” he added. The next Test is in Adelaide next week under lights with a pink ball, a format Australia has excelled at. Cummins said they would likely arrive in the city earlier than first thought to work on ironing out the batting and bowling issues that cost them in Perth. Not many changes to come But despite all-rounder Mitchell Marsh carrying some niggles and Marnus Labuschagne being badly out of form, he does not expect many, if any, changes. “I think after every Test you always kind of look at what you think your best match-up is,” Cummins said. “Four or five days ago, we thought this was our best 11 so I dare say there won’t be many changes going into Adelaide, but I’m not a selector. “I’m sure they’ll get together after the game, but yeah, not to be today and we’ve got a bit of work to do over the next 10 days,” he added. 26 November,2024 07:18 AM IST | Perth | AFPIn a reverential tone, Jasprit Bumrah on Monday paid a massive compliment to Virat Kohli, saying the team need his support more than the batting mainstay needs theirs. Kohli’s 30th Test century, an unbeaten 100, played a big part in India’s epochal 295-run win over Australia at Perth after getting rolled over for a paltry 150 in the first innings. Also Read: It's a perthfect start for India! “Obviously, I have already said that Kohli does not need us, We need him. He is an experienced player. This is his fourth or fifth tour. So, he knows his cricket more than anyone else,” said Bumrah in the post-match press meet. “He was in good shape. He was mentally switched on. Sometimes, as long as the career is, sometimes you bat in tough scenarios. He has always been batting in tough scenarios. So, it is always difficult to do in every match. But he was batting in a very good form and in a very good space,” he added. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. 26 November,2024 07:12 AM IST | Perth | PTIIt took India less than four and a half hours on Monday’s Day Four to complete the formalities, newcomer Harshit Rana delivering the final blow to cement a record 295-run win over Australia in the first of five Tests. Head tale The writing was on the wall when they slumped to 12-3 at stumps on the third evening after being set a monumental 534 for victory, Australia rolled over for 238, Travis Head providing the lone pocket of resistance with a counter-attacking 89. It was India’s biggest victory by runs on Australian soil, temporarily returning them to the top of the World Test Championship points standings. Not even a miracle could have bailed Australia out of the predicament they were in when Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith kicked off proceedings, and their situation became even direr in the day’s second over when Mohammed Siraj packed off the former, caught on the pull. Australia’s designs coming into the day would have been to spend time in the middle, as much for some confidence as to tire India’s bowlers out, but the dismissal of the left-handed opener, one of the few batters in the team capable of batting time, didn’t help their cause one bit. Also Read: "I automatically want to put myself in tough scenarios": Jasprit Bumrah Smith, not exactly flush with runs in the recent past, endured a troubled stay even as Head played his strokes freely and without inhibition on a surface that had lost a fair bit of its sting. Alongside Marnus Labuschagne, Smith is the middle-order mainstay, but the former captain struggled for fluency during his hour-and-a-half vigil, Siraj putting him out of his misery by nicking him off to Rishabh Pant. The left-handed Head and Mitch Marsh then put on 82 in Australia’s brightest batting phase of the entire Test once Jasprit Bumrah took himself and Siraj off the firing line and brought on Rana and Washington Sundar. India’s plans were clear — to keep the pressure on Australia without their two lead pacers running themselves into the ground — but as the sixth-wicket alliance assumed pesky proportions, the captain for the Test brought himself on and immediately struck paydirt when he forced Head to edge one through to Pant. Rana, Reddy claim one each Bumrah then sat back and allowed Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington and the profligate Rana to do their thing. Marsh helped himself to a few runs, including well-executed sixes off Rana and off-spinner Washington, but he was always fighting a losing battle and perished three short of his half-century, giving Nitish his first Test wicket with a drag-on to a loose delivery. After Washington got rid of Mitchell Starc to a stunning catch at short-leg by Dhruv Jurel and Nathan Lyon in the same over split by the tea break, Rana uncorked a beauty to castle Alex Carey and consign Australia to their first defeat, after four consecutive victories, at the Optus. Bumrah was the Player of the Match in a game where India found multiple heroes as he handed the reins back to Rohit Sharma, who watched the end from the dressing room after a 40-minute session at the nets facing up to the pink ball. Brief scoresIndia 150 & 487-6d beat Australia 104 & 238 (T Head 89, M Marsh 47, A Carey 36; J Bumrah 3-42, M Siraj 3-51, W Sundar 2-48) by 295 runs
26 November,2024 07:09 AM IST | Perth | R KaushikJasprit Bumrah said on Monday that he relishes absorbing the pressure in tight situations as captain and bowler which can make the job of his less experienced colleagues much easier. The ace pacer was India’s standout bowler with an eight-wicket haul in the Perth Test, shaping India’s humongous 295-run drubbing of Australia. Also Read: From kings to a bargain buy! IPL 2025 auction sees Sam Curran’s salary plummet by 87 percent “Whenever the tough scenarios come, I look at myself to see how I can contribute, even when I’m not the captain. So, whenever tough scenarios are there, I look at answers — if I’m going to bowl at this moment, what can I do? I automatically want to put myself in tough scenarios,” said Bumrah in the post-match press conference here. His fighting spirit found resonance in young bowlers like Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy as all contributed at crucial junctures at the Optus Stadium. “I was trying to put myself in that tough scenario to make the job a little bit easier for the new guys coming in. Because, you know, it’s not very easy in the first tour to take a lot of responsibility. “So, I was trying to do that and very happy to be on the positive side,” he added.
