Bandra stampede: 9 injured in stampede at Mumbai's Bandra railway station

A stampede at Bandra Terminus in Mumbai on 27th October injured nine people as passengers rushed to board a train to Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that the situation was chaotic due to the festive rush before Diwali. The train, number 22921, was supposed to leave at 5:15 AM but arrived late at platform number 1. Around 2:55 AM, many passengers gathered at the platform, leading to a surge when they tried to enter the general compartment of the train.  Due to overcrowding on train, the Bandra-Gorakhpur Express, passenger demand exceeded platform capacity, resulting in injuries. Of the injured, seven are in stable condition, while two have serious injuries. Eyewitnesses of the Bandra stampede described panic at the scene, with one man seen sitting on a bench with a torn shirt and visibly in pain. The BMC confirmed that emergency services responded quickly, and the injured were taken to Bhabha Hospital for treatment. They assured the public that the situation is now under control at the terminus. However, Western Railway has issued an official statement downplaying the incident, reporting only two injuries from the stampede. The WR’s statement contrasts with hospital reports indicating nine injuries, two of which are critical.
