Smriti Irani speaking exclusively with ANI, slammed the Congress party over Gandhi family’s treatment of Maneka Gandhi, alleging that she was "stripped and assaulted" when she contested against Rajiv Gandhi from Amethi. Maneka Gandhi, the wife of late Congress leader Sanjay Gandhi was reportedly keen on contesting from her husband's seat Amethi after his death. In 1984, she contested from the seat against Rajiv Gandhi in 1984. However, she lost by a huge margin and ended up losing her deposit."When Maneka Gandhi contested against the Gandhi family from here (Amethi)...a young widow with a young child...literally she is stripped, she is assaulted. And the message goes in the region, that if we didn't leave her, how will we spare you?" Irani said. "This whole subset, that is so enamoured by the giggling Gandhis, they don't realize the muck, violence, torture, they are capable of. Beneath that sheen, is so much of dirt," she added.

For the Lok Sabha Elections 2024, Congress finally announced its candidates for Amethi and Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seats. Rahul Gandhi has ducked the fight against Smriti Irani in Amethi as he will contest from Rae Bareli. In Amethi, Congress has fielded Kishori Lal Sharma against the sitting MP, Union Minister Smriti Irani. Earlier, there were speculations that Priyanka’s husband Robert Vadra may contest from Amethi. Feroze Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, and Sonia Gandhi represented the Rae Bareli seat in the Lok Sabha. Therefore, it is considered to be a bastion of the Gandhi Family. Sonia Gandhi has been the MP from the constituency since she won the 2006 by-poll. Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded Dinesh Pratap Singh against Rahul Gandhi from Rae Bareli. Congress will contest 17 seats and the Samajwadi Party the remaining 63 seats in the electorally crucial state. Amethi and Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituencies will vote in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections on May 20.

In this special meeting, she urged the audience to vote for BJP in order to make India a developed country and the third-largest economy in the world. She also took a dig at the opposition, the Gandhi family and their politics over the years. She went ahead and also criticized them for rejecting the invitation to the inauguration ceremony of Ram Temple in Ayodhya. On 20th of February, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ reached UP’s Raebareli. Congress and BJP workers confronted each other with loud slogans during the rally. During his speech, Rahul Gandhi made a derogatory remark that sparked controversy. While addressing the public in Amethi, he said that "the youths of UP were on a trip after boozing by night. I went to Varanasi and I saw people lying on roads drunk. Furious by his remark BJP workers purified Rahul Gandhi’s speech area with ‘Ganga Jal’.
