Israeli forces raided a militant stronghold in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday, killing at least seven Palestinians, including a doctor, local authorities said, in some of the deadliest violence in the region since the war began in October. The military said it struck militants during an operation in Jenin, a city in northern West Bank, which along with an adjacent refugee camp has long been a bastion of armed struggle against Israel.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said seven Palestinians were killed and nine wounded. The Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group said it battled Israeli forces. Wissam Abu Baker, director of Jenin Governmental Hospital, said surgery specialist Ossayed Kamal Jabareen was among the dead. “He was killed on his way to work.”

Biden rejects allegations of genocide

US President Joe Biden said that what is happening in Gaza is not genocide and reiterated his support for Israel, at a White House celebration for Jewish American Heritage month. Biden rejected claims that Israel is carrying out genocide in Gaza, criticised an International Criminal Court request for a warrant against Israeli leaders for war crimes and pledged support for Israel in its war.

France, Belgium back war crimes warrants

France and Belgium each released statements supporting the world’s top war crimes court’s request for arrest warrants for leaders of Israel and Hamas. International Criminal Court top prosecutor Karim Khan accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and three Hamas leaders--Yehya Sinwar, Mohammed Deif and Ismail Haniyeh--of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip and Israel. Netanyahu and Gallant don’t face imminent arrest.
