As per the Hindu tradition, ‘Tulsi Vivaah’ is celebrated in reverence of the holy Tulsi (Basil) plant. ‘Tulsi Vivaah’ commemorates the wedding of Goddess Tulsi with God Shaligram. While Tulsi is believed to be the incarnation of Goddess Mahalakshmi, Shaligram is considered to be Lord Vishnu’s form.

The following are a handful of Dos and Don’ts which are to be followed during ‘Tulsi Vivaah’:
Dos
- Before performing ‘Tulsi Vivaah’, one has to take a thorough bath. And if possible, put a pinch of turmeric, rock salt and Ganga jal in the water before taking bath. One can do the auspicious ‘Tulsi’ pooja only after the person is clean.
- One has to ensure that the auspicious Tulsi plant is kept in a clean environment without any dirt or unhygienic things nearby it.
- Many believe that the auspicious Tulsi plant should be placed in the northeast or north direction of the house.
- Before performing ‘Tulsi Vivaah’ please light a lamp (diya) near / under the auspicious Tulsi plant.
- For those who plant sugarcane in the soil as a part of the Tulsi Vivaah rituals, please ensure that there is no decay/ rot in the plant.
- When applying ‘haldi ka lep’ (turmeric paste) to Tulsi and Shaligram, please ensure that the paste is not too much watery. Once it becomes a thick paste, only then, it can be applied to Tulsi plant. After that, one can worship the Tulsi plant with offering of fruits.
- While performing the auspicious ‘Tulsi pooja’, please ensure that your clothes are thoroughly washed and are clean without any stains.
- If possible, wear a tulsi mala while preforming the pooja.
Don’ts
- While performing the auspicious ‘Tulsi pooja’, do not indulge in any kind of vices.
- One should not touch the auspicious Tulsi plant after consuming alcohol.
- Many believe that, while performing ‘Tulsi pooja’, one should refrain from wearing black clothes.
- One should not touch the auspicious Tulsi plant after eating non-vegetarian food.
- One should not touch the auspicious Tulsi plant with dirty/ unwashed hands.
- While performing ‘Tulsi pooja’, one should not have any negative / ill thoughts about anyone. One should perform the rituals with an extremely positive mind frame.
- One should refrain from talking loudly near the auspicious Tulsi plant.
- While performing ‘Tulsi pooja’, while the main person is reciting the mantras, the others should not indulge in chatting with each other or seeing their mobiles. Rather than can close their eyes and pray to Goddess Tulsi.
- Do not place Tulsi plant in any random container except for a clean and thoroughly washed earthen pot.
- Avoid the usage of plastic vessels to plant Tulsi while doing pooja.
