This year the festival of Lohri is being celebrated on 14 January. Lohri is generally celebrated a day before Makar Sankranti. Usually this festival is celebrated to welcome the harvest. Lohri, one of the biggest festivals in North India


Lohri is widely celebrated in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Jammu and Himachal Pradesh. During the celebrations, people gather around together with their family and friends and observe the day of warmth and harvest. Homemade delicious snacks are prepared during this time and people gather around the bonfire and engage in dance and music. During Lohri celebrations, the story of Dulla Bhatti is also narrated. Dulla Bhatti's brave acts during the rule of Mughal Emperor Akbar is remembered.

It is believed that during the time of Mughal Emperor Akbar, there lived a person named Dulla Bhatti in Punjab. It is reportedly said that Dulla Bhatti bravely protected girls who were being sold to rich merchants. 

Not only Dulla Bhatti successfully freed these girls from the clutches, rich merchants but he also got these girls married and settled down. 

After the story of Dulla Bhatti's bravery spread across different villages in Punjab, Dulla Bhatti was given the title of a hero and is still remembered during the celebrations of Lohri.
