India General Elections 2024: ‘People have lost faith in political parties’

Sarabjit Singh Khalsa, independent candidate

Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa is contesting for the third time in the MP election and his focus is on ending the drugs menace and bring employment in the state. He stopped for a chat with mid-while campaigning in the constituency.

Why are you contesting as an independent candidate?
The people of Punjab have lost faith in all political parties who have only given assurances but failed to do anything.

Are you facing any difficulties contesting against singers/actors?
I know the people of Punjab have more respect for a singer than for the family of a martyr.

What do you have to say about your father being one of former PM Indira Gandhi’s assassins?
Yes, he had killed her but what was wrong with that. She carried out an attack on the Golden Temple… killing several innocents. So she was killed. The people of Punjab stand by that.

How many votes do you think you will secure?
I will have a margin of 2 lakh votes.

What about AAP’s claims that they will secure all 13 seats this time?
It’s not 13 actually it’s, 13-0 as per my knowledge.

What about Modi and Amit Shah coming to campaign for BJP?
In Punjab, BJP will never form any government. They hardly have two to four MLA’s. I am sure that the BJP will never come in or have any margin in Punjab.

Why are youngsters moving abroad?
It’s not a new trend in Punjab. But this should be stopped as many youngsters are leaving the country. Both the state and central government have failed in this regard. Modi said he will give 2 crore jobs, but nothing has been done on the ground. Hence with no employment, students have no option but to look at other places.

CM Bhagwant Mann said he is coming up with industries for employment…
He will not do anything… he has failed in Punjab.

You are contesting for the third time despite losing twice earlier?
I am worried about the drug menace in Punjab and want to put an end to it.

What about the protesting farmers?
The responsibility of the state and central government is to give them their rights. The government should also build more hospitals and universities so childrent can be educated and have a brighter future locally.
