Protesting resident doctors face off with cops, in New Delhi on Monday

As doctors’ demand for government action on NEET-PG 2021 counselling is yet to be fulfilled, various Resident Doctors’ Associations have called for suspension of all services including emergency services across the country from December 29. Resident doctors are also staging protests outside Nirman Bhawan in Delhi demanding NEET-PG counselling.

The nationwide protest was called by the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) and other associations, a day after resident doctors said they were beaten up by police during a protest in Delhi. Dr Manish, president of FORDA, said, “Our protest will continue till we get justice. Is this a big deal to seek prompt action from the government? So many students are suffering.”

Resident doctors alleged that they were beaten up by the police on Monday night during their protest against the delay in college allotments after the NEET postgraduate exam. They threatened to intensify their agitation. AIIMS Resident Doctors’ Association, Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) and Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) have called for a complete shut down of health services on December 29 in protest.

“Our protest will continue till we get justice. Is this a big deal to seek prompt action from the government? So many students are suffering and the workload resident doctors are facing is excruciating,” said Dr Manish, president, FORDA.  On Tuesday, the Faculty Association of Safdarjung Hospital condemned the face-off, while the resident doctors’ bodies urged the government to reveal its plans for expediting NEET PG counselling. The stir entered its 12th day, even as patient care remained affected at Centre-run facilities and a few state-run hospitals. FORDA had also said that several of its members were “detained” when they tried to hold a protest on Monday.
