Students protest over ABVP's hooliganism during India-Pakistan semi-final

The cricket World Cup is long over but it seems that 'hangover' of the celebrations is still lingering on in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

During the India-Pakistan semi-final, the campus walls were covered with posters and cartoons provoking communal feelings allegedly by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists. This had led to the clashes between students affiliated to ABVP and Left parties on that day.

The matter however didn't end there. On Thursday, members of All India Students Association(AISA) and Students Federation of India (SFI) held a protest against ABVP outside the Administrative Block for spreading communal feelings in the university.

More than 250 students protested, demanding an independent inquiry committee be set up to look into the matter. "We condemn the culture of intimidation and minority bashing under the pretext of cricket nationalism by the ABVP and NSUI members," said Shefalika, president AISA, JNU. However, the ABVP members denied these allegations.

Rector Prof Sudha Pai said the administration will consider the demand of students and consult the VC before taking any decision.
