Commercial LPG prices increased by Rs 62; domestic rates remain steady

In a notable price revision following the Diwali festivities, oil marketing companies (OMCs) in India have announced an increase in the cost of commercial LPG cylinders across the nation. The widely used 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder has seen a hike of Rs 62, taking its price in Delhi to Rs 1,802 from the previous rate of Rs 1,740. This change also affects smaller cylinders, with a Rs 15 increase in the cost of 5 kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders. However, in a move likely to be welcomed by domestic consumers, the prices of the commonly used 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinders remain unchanged, bringing relief to households reliant on LPG for cooking needs. According to ANI, the revised rates are now effective immediately and are expected to impact a wide range of commercial establishments and small businesses that rely on LPG. Restaurants, hotels, and other establishments that use LPG for cooking and operational purposes may now face increased operational costs, potentially influencing the pricing for end consumers across various industries. This recent revision follows an upward trend observed in fuel prices due to fluctuating global market conditions. Such changes are increasingly seen as reflective of the broader volatility in international markets affecting oil and gas prices. On October 1, the OMCs had raised the price of the 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder by Rs 48.50, marking yet another significant impact on businesses and establishments. Alongside this increase, 5 kg Free Trade LPG cylinders were raised by Rs 12. Despite this increase in commercial LPG prices, domestic LPG prices have remained stable, which will be a relief to households across India. As domestic LPG is subsidised, adjustments to these prices are typically monitored closely to avoid undue financial stress on families who rely on this essential commodity. This revision will have implications for sectors reliant on commercial LPG, such as the hospitality and food industries, and could lead to a rise in overall operating costs. For small businesses and eateries that depend on these cylinders for their daily activities, this increase may result in adjustments to their pricing models, indirectly impacting consumers. Overall, the change in LPG cylinder prices reflects the current trend of fuel price fluctuations driven by global markets, a factor that continues to shape domestic pricing strategies. For the time being, households using domestic LPG cylinders are unaffected, but commercial establishments may feel the pressure as they adjust to the increased rates. (With inputs from ANI)

As of 11 pm on Thursday, the AQI in Gurugram in Haryana was recorded at 322, 336 in Jind and 306 in Charkhi Dadri, according to the Sameer app that provides hourly updates of the national AQI published by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Among other places in Haryana, as of 11 pm, AQI in Ambala was recorded at 201, in Bahadurgarh it was 292, Bhiwani 278, Ballabhgarh 211, Faridabad 245, Kurukshetra 270, Panchkula 220, Rohtak 222 and Sonipat at 258. An AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', 401 and 450 'severe' and above 450 'severe plus'. Meanwhile, Diwali was celebrated with great fervour, gaiety and enthusiasm in Haryana and Punjab on Thursday. Candles, diyas (earthen lamps) and electric lights dotted houses as people exchanged sweets and gifts on the occasion and burst firecrackers. The authorities granted permission to burn only "green crackers" for a restricted period of time on Diwali day. In Chandigarh, the twin capital of Punjab and Haryana, use of only green crackers was allowed within a designated time limit between 8 pm and 10 pm. However, in many parts of Chandigarh, people continued to burst firecrackers well past the 10 pm limit. The Punjab government recently said that only green firecrackers will be allowed during festival celebrations for Diwali, Gurpurab, Christmas and New Year's eve. Only green crackers, which are free from barium salts or compounds of antimony, lithium, mercury, arsenic, lead or strontium chromate, were permitted for sale and use in Punjab, an official statement released earlier said. Parents of murdered RG Kar medic remain hopeful for meeting with Amit Shah

The parents of the young doctor who was tragically raped and murdered at Kolkata's R G Kar Medical College and Hospital said they were not disappointed about missing an opportunity to meet Union Minister Amit Shah during his recent visit to West Bengal on 27 October. The couple, who had previously written to the Minister on 22 October seeking an appointment, remain hopeful that they may be able to meet him at a later time. "We understand that as Union Home Minister, he has substantial responsibilities. It must have been challenging for him to make time for us during his brief, day-long visit," the mother of the deceased doctor shared with PTI on Thursday. Despite not being able to secure an audience with Shah, she expressed empathy for his demanding schedule and continued optimism for a future meeting. Amit Shah’s recent visit on 27 October marked his first visit to West Bengal following the April-May Lok Sabha elections and, notably, came after the violent attack and death of the doctor on duty at the state-run hospital on 9 August, an incident that triggered protests across the country. Local BJP leaders had reportedly planned to arrange a meeting between Shah and the bereaved parents, though, ultimately, this could not be organised. “Perhaps one day we will have the chance to meet him,” the medic's mother told Bengali news channel ABP Ananda. In addition to addressing their experience, the parents criticised the newly formed Junior Doctors Association, a group perceived as a counterpart to the West Bengal Junior Doctors Forum, which had been actively protesting to demand justice for the late medic, as well as calling for enhanced security in state-run hospitals. "What authority does this new association hold?" the mother asked, challenging the relevance of the group. "Did they ever show support or protest after the death of our daughter? Many members of this association are reportedly aligned with what we see as a culture of intimidation and threats," she said. The aggrieved junior doctors have been vocal about the alleged presence of a ‘threat culture’ in the government healthcare sector, accusing a section of medical professionals, faculty members, and officials of fostering an environment of intimidation and harassment. In a moment of reflection, the mother recounted how her daughter would lovingly decorate their home with lights every year in celebration of Kali Puja. “After the fireworks, the three of us—my husband, daughter, and I—would go pandal hopping and enjoy a meal out. This year, our home is steeped in darkness. We pray to Goddess Kali for justice and for punishment to all those involved in the crime,” she added, with a heavy heart. The family continues to mourn the loss of their daughter, hoping that her tragic death will bring about stronger security and justice within the medical and healthcare community.

Delhi records over 300 fire incidents on Diwali, minor injuries reported

The Delhi Fire Service (DFS) responded to over 300 calls reporting fire-related incidents during Diwali celebrations, according to officials, although no life-threatening cases were reported. In conversation with ANI, Delhi Fire Services Director Atul Garg stated that nearly 158 fire-related incidents were reported between midnight and 6 a.m. “There were no major cases, but we did receive many calls. From 5 p.m. yesterday until midnight, around 192 calls were recorded, and between midnight and 6 a.m., about 158 more incidents were reported. Altogether, in just 12 hours from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m., we surpassed 300 calls,” said Atul Garg. He further explained that there were no major fire incidents this Diwali, due in part to the increased fire force. “There were minor fires, including an incident in Vikaspuri where two people became unconscious, and another in Mangolpuri, where a woman and two children sustained injuries. We had a significant number of calls, but thanks to the enhanced fire force, we managed to keep the situation under control, and no life-threatening incidents were reported,” the DFS Director added. Commenting on a fire incident on a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus, the DFS Director explained that a call had been received from the Najafgarh area around 6:30 p.m. Authorities were informed that a man was transporting potash, a substance primarily used in firecracker manufacturing and known for its high flammability, on a DTC bus, resulting in a blast. “A call from Najafgarh reported that a man carrying potash on a DTC bus had caused an explosion. Potash is a common firecracker component and is highly inflammable. Two people were injured, and we dispatched two fire tenders to the scene,” he said. Earlier, Delhi Police reported that a passenger and a co-passenger sustained minor burns on Thursday evening when firecrackers ignited on a DTC bus. An investigation revealed that a passenger was carrying a small amount of firecrackers, which accidentally caught fire. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Dwarka reported receiving a PCR call regarding the incident from Chhawla Police Station. “The fire appears to have started from firecrackers being transported on board. Initial investigations suggest a passenger was carrying a small quantity of firecrackers, which ignited, causing burns to him and the co-passenger seated nearby. Both were taken to IGI Hospital, and the investigation continues,” Delhi Police stated. Meanwhile, air quality in Delhi deteriorated significantly on Monday morning, as residents defied the firecracker ban during Diwali night. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in many parts of Delhi exceeded 350, posing serious health risks. At 7:00 a.m., Anand Vihar recorded an AQI of 395, Aya Nagar at 352, Jahangirpuri at 390, and Dwarka at 376 – all indicating 'very poor' air quality levels with potential health hazards. Delhi was not alone, as other major cities across India, including Chennai and Mumbai, also recorded poor air quality and visible smog, affecting large urban areas. (With inputs from ANI)

Climate crunch: India set for 25 per cent GDP wipeout by 2070

Climate change under a high-end emissions scenario could lead to a 16.9 per cent loss in GDP by 2070 across the Asia and Pacific region, with India projected to suffer a 24.7 per cent GDP loss, according to a new report. Rising sea levels and decreasing labour productivity would drive the most significant losses, with lower-income and fragile economies being hit the hardest, it said. The new research, presented in the inaugural issue of ADB’s “Asia-Pacific Climate Report”, details a series of damaging impacts threatening the region. It says that if the climate crisis continues to accelerate, up to 300 million people in the region could be at risk from coastal inundation, and trillions of dollars’ worth of coastal assets could face annual damage by 2070. “Climate change has supercharged the devastation from tropical storms, heat waves, and floods in the region, contributing to unprecedented economic challenges and human suffering,” said ADB President Masatsugu Asakawa. Urgent, well-coordinated climate action addressing these impacts is necessary before it is too late, he said. This climate report provides insights into financing urgent adaptation needs and offers promising policy recommendations to governments in our developing member countries on how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the lowest cost, he added.
