The glory of the Gulf is passe. A Turkish film fest takes you through Istanbul's Cinderella connections, Rumi's rapturous poetry, life after rape and indigenous ice cream businessesu00a0

Move over beautiful belly dancers and stylish sultans. Turkey transcends everything that's typical, or so shows its cinema. A three-day film festival in town is all set to make the many moods of a the mighty land come alive in its myriad colours. A lowdown.








Tales untold
Contrary to popular perception, Turkish culture isn't just about big money and terror, or so say those who're behind the do.u00a0 While Istanbul Tales tells some fascinating stories about one of the most alluring cities of the country, Ice Cream, I Scream, is another classic that talks of have-nots and hardships. A film on Rumi, on the other hand, is a draw for diehard romantics.

"Turkish Cinema is relatively new, and has grown in the last few years. It is somewhat like Indian cinema when it comes to emotions and storyline, so you know how moving it is," offers Sevgi Boz, culture and tourism counselor, Turkish Embassy. Cut-and-keep-schedule

Three monkeys
Director: Nuri Bilge Ceylan
When: Today, 6.30 pm
A family is dislocated when small failures blow up into big battles. In order to avoid hardship and responsibilities that would otherwise be impossible to endure, the family chooses to ignore the truth, not to see, hear or talk about it. But does playing 'Three Monkeys' invalidate the truth of its existence?

Istanbul tales
Directors: Umit Unal, Omur Atay, Kudret Sabanci, Yucel Yolcu, Selim Demirdelen

Audiences will discover that Little Red Riding Hood, the Pied Piper, Snow White and Cinderella are not merely the fairytale heroes, but that their tales mirror life in Istanbul itself.

Rumi the dance of love
Director: Kursat Kizbaz

The documentary is centred on Rumi, the great philosopher and poet revered and loved by the masses all over the world for his ideas on universal peace, humanism, brotherhood and love transcending the centuries.

My father and my son
Director: Cagan Irmak
When: Tomorrow, 7 pm
Sadik is a rebel who has been politically active as a university student, and becomes a left-wing journalist in the Seventies, despite his father's expectations of him becoming an agricultural engineer and taking control of their family farm in an Aegean village.

The Bliss
Director: Abdullah Oguz
When: October 11, 3 pm
When a young woman named Meryem (u00d6zgu Namal) is raped, her village custom requires that she be killed in order for the dishonour to be expunged from her family. A young man named Cemal (Murat Han), the son of the village leader, is given the task, but at the last moment, he has doubts. The pair runs away, followed close on the heels by local thugs who want to kill the girl.

Lovelorn
Director: Yavuz Turgul
When: October 11, 7 pm
Idealist Nazim returns home to his family in Istanbul after a 15-year gap. During his self-imposed exile to take a break from teaching, he becomes a taxi driver, meets a single mother who works in a sleazy club, and gets embroiled in her plight having to face a troublesome ex-husband who won't leave her alone and starts to fall in love with her.

Ice cream, I scream
Director: Yuksel Aksu
When: October 11, 5pm
Ali, who is an ice cream salesman in Mugla, tries to survive in the face of fierce competition from the big ice cream brands. While trying to promote his ice cream, he tours the village with his brand new yellow ice cream motorbike. However, the naughty boys of the town who are chasing him to have free ice cream, steal the motorbike while he is away. A story of struggle and smiles.
