State registers 51 pc polling
Low voter turnout in several constituencies marked the first phase of elections in 17 of the 28 Lok Sabha constituencies in Karnataka yesterday. The state recorded 51 per cent voting with Bangalore registering around 50 per cent turnout.
In Bangalore South constituency,u00a050 per cent of the 2.03 million eligible voters cast their votes, while in both Bangalore North and Central only 45 per cent voters exercised their franchise.
The voting percentage this time was 10 per cent less than that recorded in the previous polls (2004) when 14 of the 28 seats had voted in the first phase, according to the Election Commission.
Polling, which began on a dull note in Bangalore, did not pick up even though the weather was pleasant and a holiday was declared by most of the companies in the city.u00a0 Voting machines in a few polling stations developed minor problems before and during the polling. Much to the credit of the polling officials who were deployed in the vicinity of the booths to face such eventualities, there were no major hold ups in polling.

The break-up of percentage in other constituencies is as follows: Bellary 58.35 per cent; Chikkodi 63.5 per cent; Kolar 55 per cent; Uttara Kannada 53 per cent; Tumkur 56 per cent; Bangalore Rural 60 per cent; Chickaballapur 60 per cent; Raichur 42 per cent; Chitradurga 49 per cent; Bidar and Koppal 48 per cent; Bijapur 43 per cent; Belgaum 49 per cent; and Gulbarga 45 per cent.
