According to the sources, the patient's attendants (four of them) wanted the doctor to first look after their family member first. When the doctor resisted, one of the attendants lost his cool and started assaulting her. He grabbed the doctor's collar and slapped her, the sources said. One of the cardiologists, who was present in the ward, immediately came to the spot and prevented the situation from turning ugly further.
"There was not security officer present near the ward as the patient's attendant was assaulting the doctor," said one of the doctors on the condition of anonymity.
The doctors then tried calling Chief Security Officer of the institute but he did not respond to their calls, sources added. Annoyed with the turn of events, the doctors of the medicine department then planned to go on a mass leave.
"All the doctors from the medicine department were planning to take a mass leave. Somehow, I calmed them down and took up the matter with the medical superintendent. He promised to take the relevant action against those involved in the incident and the security officer," said Dr Debjyoti Karmakar, President, Resident Doctors Association (RDA), AIIMS.
The doctors are now demanding the suspension of the chief security officer. Also, an FIR regarding the matter was lodged on April 3.
"We just want the administration to ensure safety of doctors on the campus. It has become difficult for us to work in this kind of environment. We have also demanded that the medical superintendent of the hospital, himself be responsible for the security and report to Deputy Director Administration (DDA)," added Dr Karmakar.
The administration has said the action on the matter will be taken within 48 hours. "We will review the security system in the hospital and take necessary actions," said Dr D K Sharma, Medical Superintendent, AIIMS.
"The doctors will definitely take a mass leave if nothing is done for their security," added Karmakar.
