After 900 science students' HSC forms were rejected this year, education board asks all colleges to list out students who failed to score 40% at SSC but were given admission
After 900 students’ Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) forms for the science stream were rejected by the Aurangabad Division Board for failing to meet the eligibility criteria of 40 per cent in the science subject in Std X, Mumbai’s deputy director, school education department, isn’t taking any more chances.

Mumbai Division Deputy Director of School Education, N B Chavan immediately issued a circular to all colleges seeking details of class XI students who have scored less that 40 per cent in science subject, but have still been given admission in science stream in the academic years 2011-12 and 2012-13.
The Maharashtra Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education clearly states that the eligibility criterion for applying for the science stream is 40 per cent in Std X in science subject.
The circular has been issued to all degree colleges, junior colleges and junior colleges attached to secondary schools in Mumbai. The circular states that recent incidents at institutions have brought about the decision to scrutinise marks of students. “After the Aurangabad incident, we have asked all colleges to send us details of students who were admitted to to science stream in Std XI, without meeting the eligibility criteria of 40 per cent in science in Std X,” said Chavan.
Mehak Gvalani, vice-principal of K C College, Churchgate, said that no such circular has come so far. “I am aware of the rule for the science stream. But we have not received any such circular from the deputy director. Anyway, our last merit list closes with very high percentage, so there is no chance of us taking any student with less than the specified eligibility criteria in science subject,” Gvalani said.
Dr Kavita Rege, principal of Sathaye College, Vile Parle, said, “The rule is not new and we are aware of it. It is good that the deputy director has asked for details of students in this college. It will remind all colleges about this rule. We have not got the circular, but once we do, we will send the details of all our students. We have followed the rules.”
