Superintendent of Police (Rural) Sandip Karnik refuted the serious charge that Moreshwar Sathe, a resident of Shivne village, was killed in a staged encounter in Tuesday's clash between the police and demonstrators.

Karnik held a press meet at the Pune rural police headquarters despite the state government ordering a judicial inquiry into the firing on protesters. He showed video footage of the clash between the protesters and the police.

He said Sathe was trying to set vehicles of the police on fire and also indulging in pelting stones on police personnel. "Our police officers caught hold of him and he was taken to another place. But he escaped and joined the demonstration again, and then the mob went on toppling the police van. During the clash, Sathe was shot at," he said.

He said that six officers, including he, fired 51 live rounds when the mob went unruly. "If we are guilty, the stern action must be taken on us," he said.
