For money

Reportedly, the move to sell tickets on DTC buses is being planned to reduce the losses of the government-owned transport corporation. It is among the various options the government is mulling for which it would not need additional manpower while generating revenue for the loss-making corporation. "Such a plan can help fill DTC's coffers and people too will be able to procure tickets easily. The conductors sell tickets to the Indian International Trade Fair every year," said a senior DTC official, wishing anonymity, as he was not authorised to reveal the plans.u00a0 The DTC has 10,000 conductors and a fleet of around 4,000 buses but the numbers are about to go up as 6,000 more buses will be added to the fleet before the Games.

Innovative ways

Meanwhile, Delhi Transport Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely hinted the DTC is looking at 'innovative ways' to make money. "To reduce DTC's losses, the government is planning to allow bus conductors to sell mobile recharge coupons onboard. Public transport systems do not make profit anywhere in the world. To make it viable every government looks for innovative ways," said Lovely.
