Girl child dies quiet death on BBC radio play

While the recent rush of rural-centric TV soaps have taken up the cause of women empowerment, although in a stereotypical fashion, an FM station is airing a radio soap drama that focuses on the death of the girl child. BBC World Trust's latest FM radio series, Life Gulmohar Style, tracks five young people in search of their destiny as they cope with issues plaguing modern-day India, such as sex selective abortions. Based on the Indian Census statistics that revealed a sharp decrease in the sex ratio (976 girls for 1,000 boys in 1961 to just 927 girls for 1,000 boys in 2001), it's a 156-part Hindi drama series that will also tackle divorce and sexual harassment at the workplace.
