DU students have it easy as panel on introduction of semester exams is set to resign

Delhi University (DU) students can relax a little now that the ghost of the much-debated semester examinations seems to be making a quick exit. And for this favour they can't thank their teachers enough.

The 22-member committee of teachers formed by the university to plan the implementation of the proposed semester examinations at the under-graduate level may breakup soon.

After prolonged protests by the Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA), a member of the committee resigned from the panel on Monday. According to DUTA, other members too have planned to follow suit.
J Khuntia, a member of the university's Academic Council, said the teaching community is against the new examination system's feasibility and desirability.

"The issue was never discussed in the Academic Council. With internal and annual examinations round the corner, we are loaded with work. It's not possible to introduce the new system from the next academic year," said Khuntia.

Meanwhile, DUTA is trying to dissolve the committee. DUTA President Aditya Narayan Misra said, "We issued a letter to all committee members, asking them to distance themselves from the body. All of them have confirmed their consent."

However, for the university's vice-chancellor, the plan is on tracks. He is hopeful the new system will be introduced from the next academic year.

The Other Side
Speaking to MiD DAY, DU Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental said, "Opposition to the semester system is baseless, as it has been passed by a majority in the Academic Council."

In June, the Academic Council of the Delhi University cleared the way for implementation of the semester system for all under-graduate courses at the college level from the 2010-11 academic year. Under the new system, students will have to sit for examinations twice in an academic year. The internal assessment component would be incorporated accordingly.
